The overpowering trance remained in place as the DJ announced the first dance. Tobias led us to the middle of the floor. It was a hazy blur as he moved—no—as heglidedgracefully, forcing me to follow his lead. He spun me in place, moving me naturally into the choreography. The expert skills were a testament that he was from a similar background where boys were expected to learn proper dancing.

Other couples joined us on the floor, but I hadn’t the slightest clue of my surroundings. Tobias pulled me close, one hand resting on my waist. His soft breaths, the rhythmic movements, it was all a dream. The ground could have opened up to swallow me whole, and I’d have been none the wiser.

I did my best to remain composed, but my poise was overruled. A waft of his musky smell drifted into my lungs. It was so intoxicating that I unintentionally leaned in.

Dance must be the way to a woman’s heart. By the time the music stopped, I was positive I had fallen in love with the beautiful stranger.

Yes, it was absurd to be enamored after one dance. This strong of a reaction to a man I had known less than twenty-four hours was nonsense.

This was happening because I craved physical intimacy. Yearned for it. Practically salivated over it. I had fantasized about sex nonstop since the thought had first crossed my mind. The fact that I hadn’t touched a man in years only increased my budding need. My first intimate physical contact in years was muddling my emotions. Plus, he was so fucking hot that any girl would fall in love after one dance.

“You knew all the moves,” I said breathlessly.

Tobias smiled mysteriously, his dimple digging in deeper. “This isn’t my first rodeo.”

“Slut,” I teased.

Tobias chuckled warmly. I studied every line on his face but demanded no more explanations over his presence. I didn’t care anymore why he was here, as long as he stayed by my side.

“How about I get you a drink while you think more about why I’m here?” Tobias asked before quickly adding, “A non-alcoholic drink.”

Smiling shyly, I stepped away from the dance floor. “Coke, please.”

Tobias left, my lust-induced haze following closely behind. My blatant gawping was interrupted when the room suddenly fell quiet. I redirected my attention to a specific corner of the ballroom where the silence was stretching.

My brother—surrounded by a herd of women—had arrived.

Every pair of eyes were focused on Tristan’s entrance. It’s as if the room had been doused in an overindulging orgasm. He walked in, and a harem of women followed in his wake, transfixed.

Tris’ effect on the female demographic was nothing short of a phenomenon. It couldn’t be explained, only experienced. Women acted mad around him, fools ready to kill one another in the quest for his approval. Over the years, he has had multiple stalkers, women pledging their virginities to him, vowing their everlasting love, anything to make him notice.

Tristan appeared detached per usual and was dressed immaculately, as expected. While in public, he didn’t tolerate anything less than perfection. Not one strand of his inky black hair was out of place. The tux was pressed and tailored to fit his broad chest, and his muscular build towered over, radiating with the hidden connotation of his powers.

We were at odds with one another. Surprise, surprise. He had been angry with me all day, and my resentment stemmed from his belief that I hurt those two girls. At most, I played pranks on people, namely Tristan. I would never so much as hurt a fly. It hurt a lot that he’d think otherwise.

“Did you miss me?” Tobias passed me a coke, interrupting my thoughts.

“Huh?”

“Didn’t you notice that I’ve been gone for five minutes?”

I gave him a blank stare because I hadn’t, too preoccupied with Tristan. “No,” I responded truthfully. Ugh. I needed to snap out of it and focus on this handsome man instead. What was his purpose here anyway?

Tobias didn’t appear affronted by my answer. “I like your honesty.”

“It’s my greatest flaw. I can’t lie.”

He laughed softly. “How about one more dance, and we can brainstorm ways of turning you dishonest?”

I smiled, never wanting this night to end.

Tobias grabbed both of our glasses and settled them on a nearby high-top table. “Let’s go.” he dragged me back to the dance floor.

I laughed, trotting happily. Most of the guests had joined the dance floor for an upbeat song. Nonetheless, Tobias hugged me close to recreate our previous embrace, holding each other like two star-crossed lovers. His arms wrapped around my waist while my breasts pressed against his warm body.

Only a loud laugh snapped me out of the moment. My eyes opened to make contact with Lilith. It was the first time I had seen her tonight.

Lilith was one of Tristan’s oldest friends/on-and-off hook up. She was the perfect candidate to be a senator’s wife—well-bred, polite, and most importantly, no history of scandal.
