“Well, I’m sick of trailing you through the damn snow!”
“That’s only happened once.”
“And it’s never happening again. The separate lives rule isdone. All of it. How did you even talk me into that idea, in the first place?”
“You’re the one who came up with it!”
Trevelyan kept talking. “Done.” He repeated furiously. “Our lives are now so enmeshed, they’re a Mobius strip.” Her bra got tossed over his shoulder and he paused to lick the valley between her breasts. A sound of intense satisfaction left him, when she ran another hand through his hair.
“Trev…” Her body was on fire for him.
“If you leave me, I really will burn down the world.” He whispered against her flesh. “I am not in control, when it comes to you. I never will be. And when I get out of control Bad things happen.” His volume rose with each word. “Unless you really do want mindless wanton destruction across every known realm, you’ll stay fucking put.”
“I missed you, too.” She agreed breathlessly.
The admission calmed him. His thumb brushed tenderly over her lower lip. “…Did you?” The question was hesitant and surprisingly vulnerable.
“A lot.” She swallowed. “Can I tell you something true?”
“Always, my darling.”
“A thousand percent of my loyalty belongs to you, too. That is why I would never risk your safety for mine.”
He made a face, like that concern was ludicrous. “I’m not at risk. I’m a dragon. Destroying people is one of my many gifts.”
“And I’m a witch. Do you think our relationship is one way? That only you want to keep your True Love safe?”
His brows compressed. “…Yes?” It sounded like a guess.
“No.” Esmeralda corrected. “I will try Good magic. And I will include you in all my ideas. And I won’t leave without telling you. But I willnotstand behind you, while you risk your life. It’s always the two of us, when the army shows up to attack.” She wrinkled her nose. “And I feel like that’s probably gonna happen to usa lot. When it does, we’ll face things side-by-side. Deal?”
“Deal.” Trevelyan’s face was absolutely enthralled. “You and me, witch.”
“You and me, dragon.” She smiled, pleased with how quickly he’d learned. “I’m glad you’re here, you know. Not just because you rescued me, but because I don’t like being without you.”
“Not even for a few hours?”
“Nope. I’ve gotten used to you, I think. A couple days ago, I was ready to beat you to death with a broomstick. But now…” She lifted her shoulder in a shrug. “I don’t ever want us to be apart.”
He gazed at her, his mouth curving at one corner. “Well, I guess you should decide to keep me then.”

Dragons could hold simultaneous, yet directly competing worldviews.
They were wholly self-centered, but their families meant everything to them. They were slow to trust, but suicidally loyal. Cruel, but playful. Isolated, but needy. Protective, but reluctant to show any care. They delighted in breaking rules, but they wanted absolute surety that their mates could never escape.
That last conundrum made wedding customs among the dragons’ confusing for outsiders to understand. Dragons liked to be married. It was a territorial marking. An invisible sign that proclaimed, “This ismymate and not yours.” Possessiveness in dragons went even deeper than magic and marriage meant they didn’t have to worry about rivals.
Well, dragonsalwaysworried about rivals, but marriage mitigated their concerns. It was an unmistakable boundary that only the very stupid tried to circumvent. Those dumb bastards were viciously and summarily slaughtered, as a warning to others. It was a wonderful system.
