“Yes.”

“But you can’t do that!”

He gave a scoff of utter contempt at her protest. “Of course I can. I have darker magic than anyone in the world. Didn’t you hear what that asshole just said?” He waved a hand at the Walrus, still not bothering to look his way.

“Hey!” The Walrus protested.

Trevelyan ignored him. “I’m adragon. I can do whatever I want.”

“Well,Idon’t want it! Are you out of your mind? That’s my home and family you’re talking about hurting.”

That was not what Trevelyan wanted to hear.“Nobodywill stop me from having my revenge against Marrok and everyone he claims as his own.” He snarled, as if she’d suggested otherwise. “Certainly not a True Love, who I didn’t choose or even ask for.”

Esmeralda stifled a wince, refusing to show that he’d hurt her with his words. “You’re not my first choice, either. My record-store guy wasn’t a dick. He wrote me songs on his guitar. He was in a band. So it seems like we’re both going to have to make some compromises.”

“Dragons never, ever compromise. Wenegotiate, but we don’t compromise.”

“So start negotiating, then.”

“I’m not negotiating! Not about Marrok. There is no middle ground in this war.”

Her lips thinned. “Well, where does that leave us?”

He arched a snide brow, looking an awful lot like the judges always did, right before they passed sentence on her. “The wolf is my enemy. You need to decide whose side you’re on: His or mine.”

Esmeralda had no intention of doing anything that stupid. “Look, whether or not we chose each other, we’re still True Loves. Let’s calm down and talk about this in a reasonable…”

He cut her off. “Loyalty is what counts. Not True Love.Loyalty.” He crossed his arms over his chest. “Are you standing with me or are you standing with your so-called ‘family.’ Decide.”

Esmeralda gave up trying to reason with Trevelyan. It was no use. He wasn’t going to listen. Not now, when they were both so upset. She stared up at her True Love --At this man who she’d waited for all her life-- and told him the truth. “Family sticks together.”

The Heart Castle

Trevelyan was evil. Not just Bad.Evil.

He took real pride in that distinction. You werebornBad. You had todecideto beevil. It took time and energy to build up the requisite skills. Fortunately, Trevelyan was a hard worker. Everyone who had ever heard his name feared him like a fucking plague, because he’dprovenhe was the worst son of a bitch in the world. When you dedicated yourself to a goal, it was always pleasant to see your efforts pay off.

He read over the file the Wonderland idiots had compiled on him, satisfied with what he saw. However the “Magic Matrix” worked, his powers apparently topped out the dark end. According to the White Rabbit’s charts, Trevelyan’s magic was ninety-eight percent wicked.

(Granted, that other two percent was confusing, but the number was low enough that he could pretend it wasn’t there. Surely there was a margin of error. The technology was new.)

No one tested had ever scored higher than him, according to the handwritten note in the margin. Despite everything, itwas truly gratifying to see that his reputation remained intact even while he was in that damn mystical coma. Not a single magical creature anywhere was as horrible as Trevelyan.

Thatwas the most important thing.

Of secondary importance was the fact that he’d been locked in a lab by miscellaneous creatures who had files on him. That was never a good sign. They seemed eager to accede to his demands, but he wasn’t stupid enough to think they were really his “friends.” Marrok had taught him the fallibility of allies.

By his count, he had exactly one friend left and even that was stretching the definition of the word. Maid Marion was usually just a pain in his ass. She’d shielded him, when he’d escaped from prison, though, and saved his life with her warning about the WUB Club. So, Trevelyan didn’t doubt her loyalty. Marion Greystone was the one being on the planet he gave a shit about.

Still, even if they weren’t his friends, the Walrus and the White Rabbit had brought him all his medical charts, when he demanded to see them. And they’d left the room when he ordered them to, so they clearly wanted him appeased. For now. Who in the frozen-hells knew how long that would last, but he wasn’t overly worried. They needed something from him. That was obvious.
