This kingdom belonged to the Green Dragons.
The power he unleashed was like the creation of a universe. Or the destruction of one. Multi-forked lightening split the sky, edged in glowing-green and hotter than hell itself. One thought from Trevelyan had the deadly bolts arcing downward and striking his foes. Sparks flew a hundred feet in the air, as they found their targets.
Even the humans were bright enough to know how Bad it was about to get. A few of them screamed and tried to retreat, but the bolts of energy tracked them. Like hungry snakes, the lightening slithered after its prey. Tracing them. Jumping from man-to-man. Striking, again and again. Incinerating the soldiers to ash, one-by-one. Nobody escaped his wrath.
Trevelyan had forgotten how marvelous it felt to destroy foes with his full powers! Even without his magic, he still always won. (Dragon.) Butwithhis magic, there was nothing alive, dead, or necromanced that stood a chance against him.
The Gyre didn’t like magic? He would give them a reason why.
Even Marrok looked shocked by the devastation. He stopped fighting, just watching the carnage. In less than a minute, Trevelyan had slaughtered every human in the Diamond Kingdom. It was like a buzzsaw of fire and death cut through them. When it was over, blacked piles of ash were all that remained of Trevelyan’s many enemies. Exactly the way itshouldbe.
This time the dragon’s roar was one of triumph.
Marrok slowly made his way over to him, back to his too-handsome self and looking thoughtful. “I think maybe you were telling the truth before.” He scanned the smoldering battlefield. “I think you could have killed me and Letty, back in the Northlands, if you wanted.”
Trevelyan transformed into his usual form, as well. “Obviously.” He agreed, out of breath from the exertion.
“So, why didn’t you?”
“When it all comes down to the wire…? I never want you quite as dead as IthinkI do.” Trevelyan was already focusing on the only thing that mattered: Esmeralda. He’d been away from her for about three minutes and that waswaytoo long. “I have to get back to Ez.”
“How?” Marrok shook the sand from his hair. “Bad magic is still blocked in the Club Kingdom.”
“I’m going to connect to my half-Good mate.”
Marrok’s brows slammed down, following his thought process. “Youcan’t use Esmeralda’s powers. No one can meld magic like that. Not even True Loves.”
“Ez and I can. Our magic is the same.” Esmeralda had never cast a transporting spell, though. At least not that he knew of. He couldn’t piggyback off of her work, like he had with the log/cog trick. “I just need to access her energy and use it to power one of my own spells. Once I figure that part out, I can get back to her.”
“It’s literally impossible.”
“I know. But I believe it, anyway.”

The Club Castle
“Look at what that demented dragon did!” The Queen of Clubs shrieked, as Esmeralda was hustled into the throne room.
Two seconds after the brillig disappeared with Trevelyan and Marrok, a dozen playing card guards had burst in and arrested Esmeralda. She hadn’t bothered to resist. Esmeralda probably could have paper-shredded them all and climbed out the window, but fuck it.
Her True Love had been kidnapped by a brillig. Again! Esmeralda was sure Trevelyan and Marrok were safe. Between the two of them, they were damn near indestructible. That didn’t mean she was any less pissed about it, though.
There came a time when a witch needed to stand her ground and fight.
Especially, when she was suddenly almost understanding the Cheshire Carpet’s earlier words. Wonderland really did likesecret codes. The rug said everything counted doubly-double on Tove. Doubly-double was four. Four tiaras made up the Wonderland crown. Therefore, Esmeralda needed to be doubly-double queen in order to claim the throne. Right? Right.
…Only she had no idea what that actually meant.
Esmeralda stepped away from the playing card guards, her gaze cutting around the throne room. The space was setup like a courtroom, so she imagined this was where Trevelyan had maybe killed The Mad Hatter. Which would make sense, since a man with a purple top hat was sprawled on the checker-board floor. His hair reminded her of a yeti.
The Queen of Clubs and Grimhilde from the Cauldron Society were kneeling beside him, doing their damnedest to keep his heart beating. Meanwhile, Snow White was searching around the perimeter of the room, calling for Marrok to stop playing hide-and-seek with her.
