Esmeralda stared for a beat. “That’s what you’ve been searching for? Love?”
He nodded, his gaze intent. “And now I’ve found it in you.” His words were certain, but his heart was pounding.
“Oh.” She glanced away and thought about that. “Alright. Cool. Well, I’ll be touring my new record store.” She started for the castle.
Trevelyan shook his head. “Oh no.” He glided in front of her, cutting off her retreat. “You have something to tell me, first.”
She gave her hair an agitated toss. “Why should I tell you anything? You know it all already, right?”
“I want to hear it.” His voice was fierce. “Ineedto hear it. It’s mine.”
“Fuck that. It’smine.”
“You gave it to me.” He gestured to her eyes. “I already see it!”
“If you already see it, then what’s the issue if I don’t say anything?”
“I need you to say the words.”
“I’m not going to just…”
“Say you love me.” He interrupted quietly and it was close to begging. “Tell me something true, Ez.”
She gazed up at him, breathing too fast.
“Please?”
She closed her eyes and when she opened them again, the spark was bright enough to light up Trevelyan’s whole world. “I love you, Trev. You believe me?”
“Yes!” He lifted her right off the ground, squeezing her too tight. He knew that, but he couldn’t seem to loosen his hold. “Finally! Fucking hell, it took you long enough.” He gave her a smacking kiss. “Now you’ve done it, though. It’s you and me, forever after. You’ll have to kill me, if you ever want me gone.”
“You have the weirdest ideas about romance.” She complained, but she was laughing as she said it. “You’re lucky you fell for the Empress of Wonderland. Any normal girl would be getting a restraining order against your abnormal ass.”
“I can be normal, if you want.” He nipped at her jaw, with a playful growl. “I mastered kindness, didn’t I? I’m a dragon. I can do anything. I even won myself a witch.”
Her arms twined around his neck. “Can your very normal superpowers get us home, then? I’m worried that I’ll end upmarooning us on another planet, if I try. And I’d really like to be somewhere private, when I rip your pants off.”
She hadn’t even finished talking before Trevelyan was transporting them to the royal bedroom of the Heart Castle. He didn’t consider the destination first. He just instinctively reached for it, when she said “home.”
Interesting.
Esmeralda didn’t seem worried about a dragon carrying her off to parts unknown. She also didn’t seem surprised by their location, so she must’ve had the Heart Kingdom in mind, as well. “Your magic is so beautiful.”
“It’s exactly like yours.” He assured her, although he appreciated that she trusted his powers. “I can feel your magic and it’s strong. You can rely on it. It’s capable of much more than you think.” With time, she would believe that as deeply as he did.
Esmeralda dropped onto the bed, waving a quick hand. The clothing vanished off both of them, in a swirl of green sparkles. “How’s that?”
“You’re naked, so it’s better.”
That made her laugh. Reaching up, she dragged him down to join her on the bed.
Trevelyan didn’t resist one little bit.
Esmeralda ran her fingers along his back, as he covered her body with his own. “Are we actually gonna have sex in a bed?” She feigned surprise. “This is a first for us.”
He slid forward and her legs parted to make space for him. “Told you I could be normal.”
Still, that didn’t mean they couldn’talsohave fun.
