“Twenty minutes. And I’m telling him it’s all your fault, when he’s pissed at us.”
“I can live with that.”
Outside, it started raining.
Trevelyan frowned towards the window. He really did need to create a spell to control the weather. Even with her body magically waterproofed, Esmeralda was bound to be uneasy around storms. Nothing should ever make his mate feel uneasy.
“It’s okay.” She said, like she read his thoughts. “I’m not worried about rain, anymore.” She pressed a kiss to one of his tattoos. “I feel safe with you here.”
He closed his eyes against her hair, his arms cradling her against him. “With me, you arealwayssafe, my darling. I love you more than magic itself.”
She jerked back, an amazed expression on her face. “That is exactly what you used to say in my head! At the orphanage. I heard you, again and again, my whole life.”
“You knew I loved you, from the beginning?” He gave a snort. “Well, that explains a lot. Like why you were never afraid of me.”
“I didn’t know you loved me then, because you didn’t. But I thought you could be taught.” She wrinkled her nose in an adorable way. “Which you were.”
“Well, for a girl who paid no attention in school, you’re wonderful at giving lessons.”
Esmeralda snickered at that remark. “Besides, how could I ever be scared of someone who comforted me a thousand times growing up? Whenever I was frightened, I’d instinctively reach for you,” she stroked his hair, “and you reached back.”
He leaned into her touch, considering her words. “Our magic can meld. If you were ever in distress and some part of me felt it…”
“You’d reach for me.” She finished firmly. “Which is exactly what you did. You wanted to help me.”
Trevelyan tried to make her understand. “My magic is part of my DNA. It’s keyed to my survival and my life is entirely tied to yours.” He met her eyes. “I’m not sure the world would survive, if I ever lost you. I know for certain I wouldn’t. It’s possible my magic preemptively connected with you, knowing all that was inevitable. Knowing I’d fuck it up when we finally met. Wanting to prevent that from happening, by getting you used to me.”
“Or maybe you just wanted to help me. Because you’re sort of kindhearted, under the evilness.”
“Sort of?” He repeated in mock annoyance. “I’mexceptionallykindhearted.”
“We promised to be truthful with each other, remember?”
“I’m exceptionally kindhearted… with you.” He stipulated. “I’m ninety-eight percent Bad. You’re the only personinmy heart.”
Esmeralda smiled, her eyes sparking. “Well, that’s Good enough for me.” She kissed him.
Trevelyan sighed reverently, his mouth opening over hers. Each time their lips met, it was new and special, but this kiss was the best one yet. It was soft and sweet and full of love.
Just like his witch.

The Heart Castle
The Heart Kingdom had grown on Trevelyan.
The plaid and polka-dot landscape no longer bugged the hell out of him. The endless heart-patterned rooms of the castle no longer gave him a headache. He played daily games of chess with the Cheshire Carpet, who now lived downstairs to fully participate in castle life and sported pink manicured tassels courtesy of Esmeralda. He tolerated the giant flowers in the conservatory endlessly gossiping about his sex life. (They were jealous.). He’d even repaired the killer robots in the library, just to have the fun of destroying them again.
This was Trevelyan’s home.
