“Coincidently, that’s what ‘Trevelyan’ translates to in the forgotten language of witches.” She drawled sarcastically. “Pointless, stubborn, recklessness. Maybe it’s a sign of your wonderful wisdom and instinctive intuitiveness that you somehow guessed it.”

He sighed loud enough to part her hair. “You drive me crazy, Mate. I have no idea why I decided to keep you.”

“It doesn’t much matter, since you still haven’t answered the more important question.”

“And what question is that?”

“How are you going to convincemeto keepyou?”

The Heart Castle

Bombs shook the castle, waking her up.

At first, Esmeralda thought it was Trevelyan. When you were living with a dragon, a little destruction was expected. Honestly, the same could be said for witches. The Heart Palace had lost two stories, tons of pink walls, and a fancy little turret, since they’d moved in. Cannons firing were a bit unimaginative, but not a huge surprise from Trevelyan.

Except, she could still feel her True Love’s large body wrapped around her.

One leg was tossed over her thighs, his arms encircling her, just in case she tried to escape the bed. He’d disliked the news that she still hadn’t decided to keep him. Trevelyan was possessive and egotistical. Her hesitancy seemed to baffle him. Or maybe it worried him. Either way, he’d gripped her tightly all night and she didn’t mind in the slightest.

Esmeralda opened her eyes. So then what was all the noise…?

Another explosion rocked the building.

Trevelyan pulled a pillow over his head, with a drowsy curse. He wasn’t a morning person. “Ez, if you’re going to blow stuff up, wait until after lunch. The sun is barely…”

She cut him off. “It’s not me. I think someone’s outside, attacking us.”

He let out a groan of total aggravation. “Why?”

“Well, we’ve taken over the Heart Kingdom, and turned everyone into hogs, and wrecked the royal castle, and you have that super-secret spell…”

“No, I mean why are they attacking us atsix a.m.?” He reluctantly rolled to his feet, running a hand through his long hair. Beads chimed together. “Someone’s going to die for getting me up this early, I swear to Christ.”

The tattoos on his chest stretched around to his back. Elaborate visions of monsters and skulls and fire. They were gorgeous. Exotic and dangerous and she was certain now that the flames of them moved. Magic and beauty were just a part of the man.

Naked and fuming, Trevelyan prowled over to the glass doors, leading to the balcony of the royal suite. Whoever was out on the lawn, they’d just pissed off an evil dragon. Never a great idea.

Esmeralda followed him, grabbing up her feathered robe as she went. No sense in being underdressed for whatever the hell was happening. “Hang on, don’t you think you should…?” She trailed off with a gasp, getting her first glimpse of the sight below.

The army had arrived.

Hundreds and hundreds of soldiers were stretched out as far as the eye could see, covering the pastel hills of the Heart Kingdom. Some of the newcomers were knights on horses. Others were various animals and playing cards and dwarves. One of them was a Dormouse riding a hippopotamus.

And all of them were emblazoned with a huge club on their flags and uniforms.

Even Trevelyan hesitated for a beat.

“Oh no.” Esmeralda scanned the huge force sent to kill and/or capture them. “I thought the Queen of Clubs wasn’t attacking us until Monday?”

“I guess the calendar was right. Days really do happen two or three at a time in Wonderland.”
