With her, the interesting part wasallof it. The chasing part, sure. That had been world-altering. But catching her had been even more of a revelation. Hearing her laugh, and feelingher touch him, and being inside of her, and having her snuggle against him afterwards, like she trusted him to keep her safe…Allof it. Now that he’d had sex with the witch, Trevelyan just wanted her more. She was addictive.

She was magical.

The whole experiencehadto be magic, really. She was doing something to enhance it. Shehadto be. Unconsciously elevating it all with her unique powers. However she created the sensations inside of him, it was the greatest spell he’d ever heard of. With Esmeralda, sex wasn’t just physical. There was something else mixed in that he didn’t fully understand. …But,ohdid he like it.

Hell, he even sort of, partially, maybe, slightly understood Marrok, now. The wolf had been… Well, notright. Trevelyan would never admit that son of a bitch was right about anything. But, he’d beennot wrong, back in the WUB Club. Marrok decided to find his True Love, because he’d sensed she’d save him from his life. He’d beennot wrongin his determination to have his one-and-only mate.

Now that Trevelyan had decided on his witch, no one else would ever do. All other women were superfluous, because he’d already claimed the very best one.

Thank God Trevelyan had insisted on that monogamy deal. He’d had so many flashes of brilliance over the years, but that one was his finest work. It had been difficult to convince her to give up guitar players, yet he’d persevered and won. (No one could negotiate like a dragon.) All other men would want what he had, but he’d already claimed his mate. It was done. Decided. Just him and the witch forever-after.

He was a goddamn genius.

“Only you can look smug while chewing.” Esmeralda told him dryly.

“Eat your sandwich, darling. I slaved away making it for you.” He took another bite of his own, watching her work. He’d rarely felt so relaxed.

Esmeralda checked on her latest nail polish project. It must’ve been the liquid gold one, because it looked shiny enough for even Kingpin Midas’ tastes. “I’m not eating that sandwich, you monster.”

“It’s delicious.”

“It’sham.” She sent him a frown over her shoulder. “If I find out it used to be one of our hogs, I’m going to be pissed. I mean it.”

“Even if it’s just that horrible flying one, you dislike so much?”

She looked outraged. “You better not have butchered the flying one!”

“You said he was bothering your favorite boots, so I got rid of him. You should be thrilled.”

“Oh my God, tell me you’re joking.” She gasped. “I’m going to make that little guy a collar with a bow on it! I already have it designed.”

He couldn’t quite keep a straight face.

Esmeralda realized he was teasing her. She made an irritated sound, but her mouth was curved into a smile. “You are the worst person in the world.”

“I try. And I promise you, none of our precious citizens were harmed in the making of dinner. Now eat. You need tokeep your strength up. I’ve thought of at least a dozen more games I want to try.” Since it had occurred to him that sex could be fun, he had all sorts of creative inspiration. “How do you feel about costumes, by the way?”

Esmeralda’s hair color instantly switched to a platinum waterfall that fell to her waist. Instead of Trevelyan’s half-buttoned shirt, she wore a sparkly prom dress. A black, pointy hat covered the diamond tiara. Witches always donned them for formal occasions.

“I’mamazingat costumes.” She assured him smugly.

She was amazing at everything.

“Just don’t ever change your skin.” Trevelyan murmured. That petal-soft green flesh was staying put forever. He actually preferred the black curls too, but this blond look was also intriguing. “In my misspent youth, I once had some very scandalous impulses towards a random prom queen. I’m sure I mentioned that.”

“It might have come up.” She arched a brow. “How scandalous were these youthful impulses, exactly?”

“Oh, I was a precocious lad. They were absolutelyvile.”

She smiled, but somehow she looked troubled, as well.

Trevelyan’s head tilted. “Tell me something true, Ez.”

“I think you maybe started having sex too early.” She blurted out.

He blinked.“What?”

“I think maybe you missed out on a lot of fun stuff along the way, because you were never really a kid. I think maybe you were always very…you.” The word held a wealth of meaning.“And you like to think you’re always in control of everything that happens, even when maybe…”
