Her question lands like a punch to the gut, knocking the air out of me. What does my future look like? I just got my girl back, am I about to have to leave her again? Baseball right now is so up in the air that I don’t know what direction I want to take.
There’s a part of me that wants to stick around for my last year at CTU to finish my degree and play one last time under Coach Weber.
On the other hand, I’m nervous that I could be missing a chance to further my career if I turn down any offers.
“I honestly have no idea.” My head hits the headboard as I run my fingers through my hair. “Ideally, I stick around for senior year and get drafted, but who knows? Weber has been handling a lot of the communication for me.”
She nods her head as her phone vibrates on the table. I watch as she reads the message, her body language stiffening before she hops off the bed.
“I need to go home.”
Chloe gathers the pink material of the dress she wore last night. “Here,” I start, jumping off the bed and heading for a drawer. “I picked up a couple of things for you.”
Reaching into the drawer, I pull out a pair of black leggings, panties, and a sports bra before opening another drawer and grabbing one of my T-shirts.
“You bought me clothes?” she asks, taking the items from my outstretched hand and dropping the blanket she’s been wrapped up in most of the day. Last night she slept in an old tee and a pair of my boxers, but since we’ve been lounging around all day she opted for naked cuddles.
“It’s no biggie, just wanted to make sure you were taken care of.” She tosses her arms around me for a quick hug before she backs away and slides the clothes on.
While she’s getting dressed, I grab my phone, wallet, and keys. “I’ll drive you.”
“You don’t have to. I can grab an Uber.”
Squinting my eyes, I just stare at her before she relents. “Fine.”
The two of us make our way to my car that’s parked in the driveway and a few minutes later I’m pulling into her parking lot. I’ve barely shifted the car to park when Chloe’s jumping out of the passenger side. Turning off the ignition, I’m right on her heels.
“Wildflower—” I start, but when I glance up, I see why she was in such a hurry to get to the house.
Out of all the potential text messages I could have received today, I was not expecting the one I received while at Cody’s house.
It’s a message I’ve been waiting on for months.
“Macy?” I call out as I walk up the sidewalk. She’s sitting on the front stoop, her brunette hair pulled up in a ponytail, and I can feel the nervous energy radiating off her.
Good. She should be nervous.
Her head pops up but before she has a chance to say anything, Cody is reaching for my hand. I watch as her gaze tracks the movement. “Wildflower—” he starts but doesn’t finish.
Glancing over my shoulder, I find Cody staring at Macy while his jaw tightens. Turning into him, I reach up and kiss him. He pulls me into him and plants a longer kiss on my lips. “I’m good, Cody. Thanks for giving me a ride home.”
He flicks his gaze over my shoulder and stares Macy down. “Call me later, babe.”
Nodding my head, my lips find his cheek before I step away and start the much-needed conversation between my former roommate and close friend.
“I’m sorry for interrupting your Sunday, but I think it’s time we hash things out. I really miss having you in my life Chloe.”
I scoff, sliding past her and twisting the knob of our front door. Thankfully, it’s unlocked as I push my way inside, Macy on my heels.
Brynn peeks her head out from the kitchen, and she smiles. “Hey, girl!” she greets Macy.
The two of them had a bit of a strained relationship, but somehow along the way the two of them have worked out their differences leaving me in the dark. But at the end of the day, Macy didn’t screw over her friendship with Brynn the way she did with me.
My mind immediately flashes back to the last time the three of us were in the same room together.
“What’s going on with you two?” Brynn asks from her spot on the couch.
My shoulders deflate at Brynn’s question. My gaze leaves the TV, as I glance over at Brynn before finding Macy’s eyes.
