“I don’t like how it makes me feel. If you have weed, though, I’ll smoke the shit out of it,” I told him.

He shook his head, and the line to enter the maze moved, getting us closer to our turn.

“This is taking forever.” Naya exaggeratedforeverlike she was putting on a show for Kyle.

I glanced at her cup, seeing that it was almost empty.

Kyle caught my gaze, but he was on an entirely different wavelength. “I’ll go grab you another.” He kissed her cheek and walked away, his buddy following right by his side.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

I rolled my eyes again. “I will hit him in the mouth if he even mentions last night,” I warned her.

“That’s totally fair. I’ll text him a heads up.” She nodded eagerly like I’d finally given her permission to have fun.

I knew I was being a sour bitch, but I definitely felt like it was in my right to commit some wrongs for at least the next week.

The universe owed it to me.

I felt the heat of someone’s stare on me, but I couldn’t pinpoint who. I hated being out in the open like this, exposed like krill waiting for the whale to open its mouth and devour me.

They would cease to exist before they could realize they were dead.

Maybe it was a blessing.

“Hey, isn’t that the new guy?” Naya nudged me with her shoulder, using her head to point toward the black haired, lanky, broody guy who’d dropped into my almost-literal lap today. “What was his name?”

“Zeke, Ezekiel, something like that.” I feigned disinterest, knowing she would lose it if I mentioned how good he smelled, or how deep and low his voice sounded in my ear when he asked me a question.

She would make far too much of a deal about it.

“I bet those lip rings would feel so goo-” She moaned just as Kyle cleared his throat, announcing his untimely return.

“What would feel good?” he said with a smirk, passing my best friend her next drink.

“Uh.” She paused, eyes wide as she waited for me to get her out of this one.

“Piercings,” I said matter-of-factly.

Naya spit her beer out in a straight projectile, her choking nearly enough to distract the simple little jock-brained boy standing next to her, hoping to get laid tonight.

“I think they would hurt, no?” her dimwitted date asked, not understanding the situation.

“Depends how you feel about pain.” I winked, smiling big enough that my cheek piercings drew his attention.

She was right, though. Those lip rings could feel dangerously good in other places, and I needed a rebound.

Badly.

Naya giggled, hooking her arm into mine as we walked in front of Kyle and his friend, approaching our turn to enter the maze. I eyed my best friend’s cup to make sure there was no floating sediment in her beer. I wouldn’t put much past Kappa assholes.

We approached our turn, and a few in front of us were let into the maze followed by Kyle, his friend, and Naya. I handed the volunteer my ticket, but he shook his head, pulling the rope into place and sealing the entrance.

Naya’s mouth went agape. “She’s with us!”

“We can only let so many people in at once. Once a couple more come out, she can go in.” They shrugged.

“Come on, we’ll wait for her in there.” Kyle pulled at Naya’s hand, tugging her into his side and kissing her neck.
