“Look. I wasn’t trying to undermine your position or disrespect you. However, I do want you to be more mindful of your actions and how it can affect us. As OG stated, everyone is on our side, and it’s essential for us not to give those haters a reason to come after us. They reached out for a reason because they are trying to protect us, and we need to take the heat and be cautious about our actions. Please don’t kill anyone unless it’s necessary. I’m not asking you to run it by me because you’re gonna run your team the way you see fit, but please think of the organization as a whole,” Pure urged. I nodded in understanding even though I thought he was being dramatic about it. He was a contracted killer telling me to keep my body count to a minimum. That shit seemed ass backwards to me.

“I’ll work on it. The last thing I want is for anyone in our camp to get caught up with some bullshit. Especially something that’s my fault.”

“That’s all I ask.”

We continued to chop it up with OG until Nana Alice made her way into the living room.

“You’ve got it smellin’ good up in here, Nana.”

“Thank you, Soulie baby. I’ve been wondering when you were gonna come by and see us. You dropped your grandpa off from his appointment two weeks ago and didn’t even come in and give me a kiss,” she replied with a hint of disappointment showing in her eyes.

Getting up from my seat, I sauntered over to her. My arm wrapped around her waist as I pressed my lips against her temple. I lingered a little longer as I took in her cinnamon and vanilla scent. She was dressed in her signature brown and green house dress with her silver hair piled up into a messy bun. One thing I could say was that the women in my family weren’t bald-headed. They may have had smart mouths, but they had edges too.

“I apologize, Nana. My schedule was a little hectic and I was in a hurry. However, that’s no excuse. I promise I’m gonna do better.”

“Yeah, yeah. Your grandfather and I are getting old. You and your siblings better enjoy your time with us while we’re here because you never know when it will be our time to go home.”

“Please don’t start this today. The last thing I want to think about is losing one of you,” I pleaded. I hated any conversation in relation to death.

“Oh, grow up, child. Dying is as much a part of life as living is. All I’m asking is for you to include me in your life while I still am able to be a part of it. I know that y’all have your own lives but try to make some time for us in your busy schedules. Your grandfather is sickly and I’m not too far behind him. We want to enjoy our moments with y’all while we can, and while our minds are still ours to control.”

“Understood.” As much as I hated the thought of losing them, she was telling the truth. The reality was that every year that went by was another year closer to them leaving me. I thinkthat was one of the reasons why I kept my distance unless I was needed. In my mind, it wouldn’t hurt as much if I kept my distance. It wasn’t a valid excuse, but it was how I lived my life. I tried my best not to get too attached to anyone because you never knew when they would leave.

“The food is ready. I already made a plate for you and your brother.” She nodded toward the kitchen. The aroma alone was enough to have me ready to smash and take a nap. I knew the basics when it came to cooking, but my lifestyle kept me on the go a lot, so I rarely had time. The only way I got to eat a home-cooked meal was if I came over here or if my sister Patience cooked.

“Thank you, Nana. I love you.”

“I love you too. You remember what I said.” My phone rang, alerting me to a 911 text. The contents of the message caused my stomach to drop. What the fuck was going on? I didn’t want to alert my family right away until I got all the details, but I had a feeling that my promise to Pure was about to end before it even got started.

The Previous Night

“I can’t believe you got me into this shit. You said that after you gave him the pills he would pass out, but the nigga is still alert,” I hissed under my breath. Majesty made it seem like this would be an easy lick, but two hours had passed, and he was still ready to party.

“Well, I did get these pills from a new guy. They may not be as potent as the handlebars that we normally get. Don’t worry, friend. I promise you he’ll be out in no time.” Her words gave me very little comfort. I was ready for everything to be over with so I could collect my money and take care of my business.

“Come on, ladies. Let’s get this party started right. It’s gonna be a long night for the both of you.” My eyes shot over to Majestyas I gave her the deadliest look. I hadn’t planned on having sex, and Majesty made it clear that I wouldn’t have to. I needed the money badly, but I wanted to avoid fucking for it if I could.

“Okay, daddy. I’m gonna pour us a shot and then we can turn things up a notch.” Majesty purred as she switched her way into the kitchen. I turned my head and rolled my eyes, praying this would be over soon.

“My girl told me she had some fine ass friends but damn. You’re one of the baddest motherfuckers I have ever seen.” I wanted to tell him to go to hell, but instead, I put on a fake smile and batted my eyelashes.

“Thank you. You’re very handsome as well.” It wasn’t a lie because he was very good looking. He was tall and lean with a caramel complexion littered with tattoos. The low curls on top of his head were blond, reminding me of Odell Beckham’s signature style. If I had to guess his race, I would assume he was black and Hispanic. You could tell based on the designer from head to toe that he had money. However, his boyish looks didn’t seem like someone who was hustling in the street. I guess you can’t judge a book by its cover.

“So, what do you do for a living?” he inquired, causing my eyebrows to raise. This wasn’t some kind of date or something. I was here to entertain him and nothing more.

“You know. A little bit of this and a little bit of that.” Majesty swore that he didn’t know where she worked, however, you could never be too sure. The last thing I needed was him coming to my job to confront me later on.

“Oh, you one of those mysterious types? I like that, little mama. You got a little bit of spice to you.” My poker face was beginning to wear thin as I waited for Majesty to come back into the room.

“All right, I got a shot for you, babe, and a shot for me and my girl.” She winked at me as she handed him his shot. I had noidea what she put in it, but I prayed it worked. If he didn’t fall asleep in the next hour, we were going to have to come up with a new plan. Majesty was playing with fire, and I just prayed that it didn’t backfire on us.

“Damn, that shit was strong!” he called out, setting the shot back on the table.

“You must be a light weight, baby. It went down smooth for me.” Majesty giggled as she walked closer to him with another shot in her hand. His hands roamed her body as she twerked in front of him. Majesty was a gorgeous woman, and no one could take that from her. Her light buttery skin was littered with colorful tattoos from her neck down to her thigh. Her ass jiggled with every step that she took. She danced for a few more seconds before she squatted down in front of him. Majesty winked at me before turning to face him.

“Put it down my throat, papa.” Majesty purred, waving the glass in his face. The way he stared into her eyes made me feel like I was interrupting a passionate moment.

“I got something I could put down your throat. Just tell me when,” he replied.God, why did I get myself involved in this mess? There was a sinking feeling in my gut that was telling me things weren’t gonna go as smoothly as I wanted them to. The last thing I needed was for this night to end badly. Not only would it affect me, but it would also affect my family. I blamed myself for even agreeing to do this, but I also blamed my parents. They got me into this situation, and now I had to figure out a way to get us all out of it.
