“What’s that supposed to mean?” I straighten, ready to be pissed at him for whatever he’s about to say.

“Born into a Norman Rockwell painting,” he says cautiously.

“Norman Rockwell? You think my family is perfect?”

“Are your sisters not your best friends? All working together? Are you not close with your father and grandparents?”

“Yeah, I guess so.” I chuckle thinking about it. “I mean, my sisters have probably hurt my feelings deeper and more often than anyone, but that’s family, right? But yes, we are all pretty close.”

Emerson saysmy point exactlywith his eyebrows.

I can’t stop myself. “Do you even have siblings? Are your parents alive? Do they live here? Are you going to see them?”

“Yes, two younger brothers. And yes, we’ll be having a family dinner while I’m here.” He turns, done with the conversation. “Good night.”

“Good night,” I say softly.

He turns back at his door. “It’s impressive,” he says on a tense exhale. I just stare, unsure of what he is talking about—my family, I guess? “Your binder,” he adds.

“Oh.” I literally bite my cheek to keep from smiling.

“Your work . . . is impressive. You are impressive, Miss Canton.” He closes the door.

What?!

I bite harder on my cheek, tasting metal. I will not audibly exclaim about the fact that the Winter King just gave me a real-life compliment. It’s a strange feeling, like it’s beyond a compliment. For a man who says only a handful of words a day, for him to use one, more than one, to offer me praise, it’s heady. I’m high. And I can see how if I’m not very careful, I could easily become an addict.
