There was one thing I knew -- I had less than six hours until we got to Mars.
What would happen when they found out I wasn't really Greta? Would they believe me? Would they even care? What the hell was I going to do?
CHAPTER FIVE
- ZEYSOR -
THE REST of the trip was completed in relative silence. I tried a few times to get the human woman to talk, but her clipped responses irritated me. She was sarcastic and rude, exactly how I expected an Earthling celebrity to be.
So then, why was I so attracted to her? She made my body ache with need whenever I looked at her. Was she being rude to save herself? Was she more scared than she was letting on? This human was a mystery that I wanted to solve.
Too bad that she would never be mine. As soon as we returned to the space station, she would be part of my Commander's harem.
I was going to lose her.
No. I shook the thought from my mind. I can't lose something that isn't mine. Why was I acting like this? I was sworn to do anything my Commander said, including abducting females at his request. She belonged to him. Not me.
I glanced back at her. She was staring at her feet.
No, I thought. A woman like that doesn't belong to anyone. But she would be broken, just like the rest. Why did that thought make my heart ache?
I kept my attention on the screens. Mars was close and the space station was closer. Soon, we would dock and my mission would be complete.
"Approaching destination," The computer said.
I began preparing the shuttle for landing.
The human woman looked up. "We're almost there?" She asked.
"Yes," I said as I typed on the control board.
The control team would assign us a hanger to land in. I just had to wait for the approval. Landing a shuttle on a space station was delicate work; too much force could affect our orbit around the red planet.
"Please proceed to hanger 3," The computer said.
Behind me, the female sucked in a breath. Her fear was palpable now.
As a Hunter, I was trained to smell fear in my enemies, but she was different. Sensing her fear made me want to comfort her. This feeling was bizarre.
"Prepare for landing, Greta," I said.
"I'm not Greta," She protested through clenched teeth.
How long was she going to keep up the lies? Her persistence was making me doubt myself, even though I double checked her file while she was passed out. This woman was the person we were looking for. I was sure of it. Either that, or Greta had a secret twin. How common were twin offspring for humans?
"Please proceed to hanger 3."
The computer shook me from my distracted thoughts. I tapped the autopilot button and entered the coordinates. This human was so distracting. I would need a session in a relaxation chamber once this was all done.
"Here we go," I said to the human female.
I adjusted the screen to show what was outside the spacecraft; Mars loomed to one side of us, shining a dusty red. Just ahead was the space station, gleaming like an artificial silver moon.
The female held her breath. Her eyes were wide with wonder and her fear temporarily forgotten.
I looked away before I was trapped by her beauty again. "Welcome to Mars."
