"That's what I've been saying," She replied.
There was a long silence. The Commander looked her up and down, scanning every inch of her body. "You're not Greta." This time it wasn't a question. "Her voice is nothing like yours. You're nothing but a fake. A copy!" His eyes went dark with rage.
"That's what I've been saying!" She gasped.
The Commander turned at me, grinding his teeth. "This is not Greta Yurt. Is this some joke? You've brought me a look-a-like!"
I glanced at the photos of the real Greta on the screen and then back at this woman. They looked identical to me. I focused on the photo, and that's when I realized the mistake I'd made. Of course, she wasn't Greta, this woman made me ache for her in a way that was beyond physical. I didn't dare label it what I thought it might be.
"Sir, she was leaving Greta's workplace and looked identical to her. I was certain she was Greta."
The Commander snarled and hit me with the back of his hand, before grabbing my shoulder and pushing his cracked fingers into my flesh. "This is not the situation that I can excuses a mistake, Hunter."
I winced as he pushed between my hard scales into the more vulnerable skin.
"Sir, how can I make it right?" I asked. I fell to one knee and bowed my head to him. My job was to serve my Commander and nothing else.
The Commander released me and paced back and forth. "This human is beautiful, but she has no place in a Commander's harem."
Lola made a sort-of offended sound, fidgeting with the binds that kept her hands securely behind her back.
The Commander pressed a button on his desk.
A shrill sound echoed from the intercom system, and two guards appeared a moment later. They weren't Hunters, but a step down, a regular security detail.
"Guards," The Commander said. "Take this human away to the holding cells until I decide what to do with it."
"No!" I shouted as one reached out for her. The thought of the lowly Terruxian guards touching her made me lose control. I bolted up from where I knelt and turned to them.
"Zeysor!" The Commander snapped, bringing me back to reality.
I blinked with surprise. Did I really almost turn on them? For some reason, I was panting.
"No, wait, please!" Lola shouted as the guards grabbed her.
I was immobilized, torn between my loyalties to the Commander and this unexplainable need to protect this human. I turned my head away, unable to bear to watch the human be hauled away.
I heard her shout even after the door was closed. It killed me.
"Now that the human is out of here," The Commander said with a threatening pause. "I hope you realize the severity of your mistake."
"Yes, sir," I said, forcing my eyes to the floor. I balled my hands into tight fists. Would he notice how much I was struggling to remain loyal to him?
"Go to your sleeping pod and I will call for you when I decide what your punishment will be."
"Yes sir," I said, turning to the door.
"That human will be on the next shuttle out of here," the Commander added. "Doubt she'll make it long as a slave, but that's her price to pay for your mistake."
CHAPTER SIX
- LOLA -
ALIEN GUARDS came out of nowhere and grabbed me, ripping me away from Zeysor and the older alien. I didn't want to stay here, but I didn't want to go with them either. Zeysor was the only alien I knew, and maybe almost sort-of trusted.
"No, wait, please!" I cried.
My eyes locked onto Zeysor before he turned away.
