The space station rarely ran into issues with anyone on board, so the station's prison was small, located on the opposite side of the hangar for security reasons.
I could think of nothing but her as I walked. I had tunnel vision. I wanted her, craved her with every fiber of my being. It was unlike anything I'd ever felt for another person in all my life.
Whatever had taken a hold of me, I couldn't fight it. I was filled with emotion and lust for this human. I could not let her be taken away to a slave colony because of my own stupidity. She deserved better than that.
"Lola," Her name rolled over my tongue.
I was getting close to the holding cells now. I could feel her as I got closer, as crazy as that sounded.
Other Hunters used to talk about when they found their perfect female. Their mates, designed by the stars to be the perfect companion. I'd never taken them seriously until today. Is that what I was feeling?
I stopped at a teleportation tube. "Holding cells," I said.
"Holding cells," The computer said back to me after a moment. "Waiting for teleportation channel. Channel confirmed."
In a flash, I was teleported to the lowest decks of the space station. These halls didn't have the same shine as the rest of the station. Whoever designed the place decided to save their chrome budget for the upper decks. It's not like we had many issues on this place anyway, I'd bet a year's salary that these holding cells were empty most of the time.
There was no one around. Not even a guard standing watch. That didn't surprise me. All of the doors were locked with bio signatures. There was no way for a human to get out of this place without help.
I should save her.
No! I couldn't betray my Commander.
The warring thoughts in my head would not be silent.
I found her cell, the first of the few down the hall. A red light blinked above the door, showing that someone was there. The light sensed her body heat and movement. If anyone disturbed it, then security would be called.
I pressed my finger against the bio scanner and waited. It took a moment, but the computer unlocked the door with a simple warning.
"Visitor biometrics confirmed -- Zeysor, Squad 43," The computer said. "Unauthorized contact with prisoners will be recorded. Log 4099 commencing."
I rolled my eyes at the computer. No one checked these logs, anyway. If they really wanted tight security, they'd get rid of the bio scanners in this hall completely. We Hunters were so well trained that the entire station ran on the assumption of our compliance to the rules.
Now that I thought of it, I'd never broken a rule like this before. My hand trembled as I pressed the scanner again and the door hissed open.
The human was wrapped in a blanket on the floor with a discarded water cup beside her. She bolted upright like a scared animal, blinking as the lights kicked on. She held up her hand to her face.
"It's you," She said. Her voice wasn't happy or grateful, it dripped with disgust.
I glanced back into the hall to make sure we were alone.
She glared up at me. "What do you want?" She asked.
"I wanted to apologize for getting you stuck in this mess," I said. Humility was a valued trait amongst Hunters. Even the most hardened alpha male would bow his head when he had done wrong.
"Great. So, how is that going to help me?" She snapped. "I need to get out of here. I need to get back to Earth."
I flinched, knowing that she could never go back. The Commander had already decided her fate. She would be a slave for the rest of her life, and it was all my fault.
"Unless you're here to take me back to Earth, get lost," Lola said.
The look in her eyes gave me chills. Her beauty was intoxicating, such a face would be valued no matter where she went in the universe. Humans, Terruxians, and other beings would fall at her feet.
Was the one the stars made just for me? Was she the female that was fated to be my love? My mate? I couldn't fight the emotions that surged through my body like solar storms, burning me inside and out.
"I can't take you back to Earth," I said.
Lola looked away. "Then leave me alone."
