"I don't know. But those slavers are weak, and they like to capture weak prey. They've likely never had a Terruxian Hunter in these cells before." I sucked in a breath and slammed my boot against the door again.
A tiny crack bloomed near the edge.
Lola gasped. "Do you see that?"
I nodded and kicked the same spot again.
The crack grew wider, and an alarm sounded. The white lights turned red and flashed.
"I wondered how long it would be until we set off security," I said, mildly amused by how pathetic these slavers were compared to trained Hunters.
One more well-placed kick broke through the sliding plastic door. The electric lock fizzed and failed with a satisfying shower of sparks.
I pushed through the gap between the door and the wall, thankful that there was no cell beside me. Any other prisoners would just be dead weight or an obstacle. This was all about Lola and me now.
Lola watched me through the clear walls. Her eyes were big and round, as if for a moment her innocent mind thought I might leave her to save myself. That wouldn't happen. We were linked now. She was my mate and I would let nothing bad happen to her.
I stepped back before slamming my shoulder into her cell door. I bashed on the electric lock until it wiggled free.
"Almost got it," I grunted.
Suddenly, two shots from a laster blaster came over my head, hitting the wall only a whisper above my skull.
I jerked back, catching a glance of two blue-skinned guards heading towards me.
If they were smart, they would have already called for backup.
More lasers came heading my way.
I stepped aside and let the blasts wear down the door. It was time to use their losers to my advantage.
"Watch out, Lola!" I shouted before slamming into the door.
The thick plastic cracked and bowed inward before shattering.
I grabbed Lola's hand just as the guards were upon us.
"Stop right there!" One shouted.
"Honestly, they sound like Earth cops," Lola said.
I didn't know what she was referring too, but she wasn't scared of them either. I kept her shielded from the laser blasters, knowing that my skin was much tougher than hers.
I ran at the two guards, spooking them enough that one dropped his blaster. Two well-placed punches rendered them unconscious and bloody. I grabbed one blaster and tucked it into my belt before taking the other.
The distress button on the guard's uniform was already beeping. More of them would be here any second, and while they were easy enough to take out one-on-one, I didn't want to wait around for the entire brigade to show up.
"Let's go," I said to Lola.
She nodded.
The floor shook beneath our feet and the ship rumbled and lurched upwards.
"What was that?" Lola gasped.
"They're going to uncouple from the station soon," I said. "They're early. We need to get off this ship or we're dead." I took her hand and started running.
"Where are you going?" She cried.
