The illusion faded and I was myself again, hard blue skin and all.
“I’m glad to hear that,” I said. My mate was so perfect for me, nothing about my alien nature made her fear me or think less of me. The stars knew that even though we were different species, we were meant for each other.
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
- LOLA -
THE MOMENT we stepped off the shuttle, time went by in a whirlwind. Somehow, I was unsure how we were going to pull it off without IDs or money, but after a few phone calls to some good friends, we found our way back to Hollywood from the London Intergalactic Port.
As promised, I didn't tell anyone about what happened, pretending that I went on a road trip instead. I'd just been fired and was in a poor mental state. No one even batted an eye.
The only person who had something to lose from this was Greta, who I called shortly after getting back. I told her that someone had tried to abduct me, thinking I was her. I begged her to pump up her security team, but if she did, I had no idea. Still, I'd tried my best, and she hadn't been abducted ... yet.
Zeysor hacked his ID chip to siphon the money from his account, a digital currency that was conveniently sought after and ended up exchanging the balance for a nice sum of American dollars.
We moved out of the city to a small town in Oregon state, away from anyone who might identify me as Greta Yurt's body double. I even let my hair grow and go back to its natural dark brown color.
Our home in the middle of nowhere allowed Zeysor a lot of freedom to do whatever he wanted and not have to hide under the power of the cloaking device unless we were in town. He'd consumed himself with learning as much about Earth as he could.
Zeysor worked in the garage, learning woodworking and metalworking. He landed a job for a local construction company, where his alien strength was appreciated beyond measure. Everyone in town knew him as the gentle giant, completely unaware that he was a Terruxian in disguise.
***
One day while we were out for a hike, Zeysor got down on one knee and proposed to me with a ring he'd made himself out of silver and gold wire. A pearl was twisted onto the top. It was perfectly imperfect.
I couldn't help but cry.
"What? Is it not ok? I thought you would be happy!" Zeysor said hurriedly.
"No, it's perfect," I sobbed, holding out my hand so he could put the ring on my finger. "It's perfect." My shaking legs gave out, and I knelt on the path with him, kissing him until I ran out of air.
Suddenly, I felt as if someone was looking at me.
I jumped to my feet, expecting to see a bear or a cougar, which wasn't uncommon in these woods.
"What is it?" Zeysor asked, taking my hand and running his thumb over the ring.
"I feel something. Someone is watching us," I said.
Suddenly, a blast from a laser gun came out of the bushes, narrowly missing Zeysor.
My mate tumbled down, bringing me with him, and shielding me from the attack.
"What was that?" I cried.
Zeysor pulled off his cloaking device, revealing his Terruxian form. "Who's there? Show yourself?"
An alien stepped out of the cover of tree branches. He was a Terruxian Hunter; a huge bulky male with rock-hard scales and a bald head. "Finally, I found you."
Zeysor readied himself for a fight, grabbing at the knife and bear spray he kept on his belt whenever we went for hikes.
"Get out of here!" He shouted. "Humans will see you."
"See me? What about you?" The alien laughed, raising his laser blaster.
Zeysor deflected another blast with the knife. In the months we'd hidden on Earth, he'd kept up his training just in case someone came for us. Now it was time to cash in on all that time he spent in the basement gym.
Zeysor wasted no time, lunging forward at the attacker and slicing with his knife. His knife hit the hard skin and slid off without so much as a scratch.
