“Hey, Bunny,” he whispered, but it was sad and reserved.
“What’s wrong?” I tried to hold back a yawn but failed.
“I couldn’t sleep.” I laughed; it didn’t really seem like he had tried if he was fresh out of a shower. I laid back down and slid into him.
“We haven’t had a proper sleepover in ages.” Not being able to sleep had been the common reason we found ourselves in each other’s bed, staying up until we talked ourselves to sleep.
“Are you mad at me?” He sounded genuinely distraught, and his body was tense.
“What?”
“Earlier, when Victor was being a shit, I believe you told me to fuck off.” His smile was small and didn’t reach his eyes.
“I was upset with him, but no, I’m not mad at you.” He pulled me into a hug and refilled all the sexual desire I’d just relieved myself of. His skin smelled like clean soap and whatever cologne he wore, I wanted to lick his chest just to taste it on him.
“I just wanted to make sure.” Shame washed over me. He was distraught enough to wake me up and make sure we were okay, but I couldn’t get past the thought of devouring him.
I squeezed my thighs and found a reason to be distraught myself—I hadn’t put on shorts before bed and I was just in a scant, lacy pair of underwear. His hand was dangerously close to the waistband. I cleared my throat.
“Are you…staying in here?”
“No, Vic has a movie going. I told him I’d be back in a few minutes.”
I looked up from his chest and he was watching me. Dakota moved over me, putting me on my back and doing nothing to help the situation. His face was dangerously close to mine, and I leaned into the delusion that what flashed in his eyes was equal desire to have me in this position. His hand pushed into the bed by my hip, but I wanted his fingertips to bruise me there instead.
“See you in the morning?” I nodded. “Spend the day with me? I have some errands to run, and you didn’t come back.” He smiled again and I wanted to lick the tips of his fang piercing.
“Yeah, sounds fun,” I squeaked out.
“That’s my girl.” He leaned down, his chest almost brushing mine, and kissed my temple. “Goodnight.”Judas Priest.
He backed out of my bed and quietly padded across the room before closing the door softly. I wiped my hands over my face to keep from hyperventilating.
What the fuck is he doing to me?
Dakota— The Next Morning
The sun was warm, but the water was cool in the Hart’s pool. Little waves crested against my chest, and I would’ve enjoyed my time in here more if my mind wasn’t racing. Last night had been rough, but not in a typical sense. I needed to know Vera was okay, and I found herreallyokay, then I found myself in her bed with a thread so thin it almost hadn’t existed.
The patio door slammed and jerked me from my thoughts. Looking over my shoulder, I saw Vic walking out with snacks and a speaker, the music growing louder as he got closer.
“Where’s Vera?”
“Uh,” he paused and looked behind him. “She was following me, should be here in a sec I guess.” He shrugged and left it at that as he started setting things up on his table.
As he predicted, Veradis stepped out onto the patio. Her mouth moved, but I heard nothing. She was beautiful, stunning—so effortlessly gorgeous that she stopped my world as I watched her walk around the edge of the pool. Hands raised as she pointed at Vic and he flicked her, I zoned back into the conversation.
“That’s why you’re a little bitch, born first or not.” She followed him as he retreated, reaching for his pants and yanking them high until he yelped. He grumbled, removing the fabric from his ass as she walked back to me.
“Imma get you back for that,” he threatened, but she flipped him a perfectly manicured middle finger.
“Come swim with me,” I insisted. The sun silhouetted her frame, and I wanted her in my arms.
“I thought we were running errands?” She dipped her foot into the water and splashed water toward me with her toes. “I’ll have to shower after if I get in.”
“They’re not time sensitive, it can wait a bit.” I stepped closer, ready to say anything and change my entire day if it meant she’d get in here with me. From the corner of my eye, I saw Victor walking back to her.And knowing him…
“I don’t feel like getting wet,” she whined with a small pout. “It’s nice out, I’ll just sunbathe and then we can go.” Vera stepped forward out of Vic’s way. I splashed her feet, and she cocked an eyebrow. “Real mature.”
