“That’s one of his school friends,” Lizzie said, by way of explanation.

“He said that parents just pretend he exists. So we’ll stay babies forever.”

“Well, you tell Samuel from me that he’s wrong,” I replied. “And that Santa will be very upset to hear someone’s spreading such an untruth.”

“You mean…?”

“I most certainly do,” I said.

Lizzie was doing her best to keep a straight face. “Now do you believe me?” she asked her son.

Seb nodded. “I do.”

“Good,” his mum replied. Lizzie turned her attention to me, trying to disguise the amusement in her voice. “Now, about that afternoon…”
