“Mummy, can we?” Seb asked, his tear-stained face full of anticipation.

Lizzie again looked my way. I could see she was torn between appeasing her son and not wanting to impose.

“It’s all right with me,” I said, wanting to reassure Lizzie. “If it’s all right with you.”

She sighed, as if glad the choice had been made for her. “Thank you,” she said. “We’d love to come.”

Seb jumped up and down. “Did you hear that, Frank? We’re spending Christmas with you and Antonia.” He raced over to the dog and hugged him tight.

Lizzie and I looked at each other. “I’m sorry,” Lizzie said.

“Don’t be,” I replied, as my phone bleeped indicating a text had come through.
