“Yeah, his daughter called and said he’s in a regular room, that he should be home later this week. They’re going to do some follow-ups with a cardiologist, which is a great idea. Thanks again for what you did that night.”

“I guess it’s my job now. I’ll work on that, too.”

He watched her walk away, not seeing Beck until the other man bumped his arm.

“How’s that going?” Beck asked.

A little panicked at being caught, Austin waved a hand. “There’s nothing there. She’s working for me now.”

“Yeah, so?”

“Bad idea.”

“Yup, never done in the history of time, two coworkers falling for each other.”

“And very rarely does no one get hurt.”

“Seven years is a long time to be alone, man. That’s all I’m saying.”

Austin rolled his eyes to send the message that there was no “there” there. “Where’s Lacey and the babies?”

“I’m picking up breakfast for them. She doesn’t like to get out with them yet, and she was up all night, so I thought maybe something she didn’t have to cook was in order.”

“Or you could have cooked.”

Beck grinned. “I could have. Or I could drive into town and pick up breakfast.”

“The babies okay? Something keep them up last night?”

“I don’t know, man. They seemed to keep each other up. She’d get one fed and to sleep and the other one would wake up, over and over. I’m going to make sure she gets back to bed after dinner, and I’ll do what I can to take care of them this morning.”

“Good man.” Austin slapped his shoulder. “You need anything, give me a holler.” And he headed down the street to his apartment.

Chapter Seventeen

Ginny’s first fullday at the office completely on her own was a nightmare. First of all, she woke up at four even without her alarm. She tried to get some editing done, but her head hurt from all the editing she’d done the day before, so all she did was worry about the day to come.
