“How many people know?”

“Um, Sofia is the only other person I know for sure. Probably Caleb. I am sure Sofia wouldn’t tell, but I don’t know about him.”

Poppy hook her head. “To be honest, I think I would have rather heard about it from one of my friends.”

The words stung, and Britt struggled to keep her expression neutral. “Okay, well, I am going to go. I guess I’ll see you around.”

If she half-thought that Poppy would stop her, she was mistaken. She headed down the dim hall and out the front door, only to see Sofia coming up the walk.

Sofia’s shoulders squared. “What are you doing here?”

Britt lowered her gaze again, automatically. She needed to quit that, needed to quit feeling guilty. She’d done nothing wrong. “I came to talk to Poppy.”

Sofia narrowed her eyes. “What about?”

“About last night. I didn’t want her to hear it from someone else. I didn’t want to think we were hiding it from her.” She considered Sofia a moment. “What are you doing here?”

Sofia had the grace to blush, a little. “I was going to tell her, for the same reason.”

“Well, she knows. Are you still going in?”

Sofia nodded, moving up the steps past Britt. “She might need to vent.”

“She did some of that.”

“Well. With someone who isn’t involved.”

Britt swallowed the urge to apologize again and headed down the sidewalk to her truck.

She hadn’t come to town to be disruptive, but here she was causing pain no matter what she intended.

It was time to go home.
