“Ah.” He swallowed. “Not that exactly.”

“Yes, that. I’ll have you know I drove all the way across Texas without incident.”

He rapped on the table with his knuckles. “Knock on wood.”

She widened her eyes in exaggerated dismay. “Con McKay. You taught me to drive, remember, so if I wasn’t so great at it, that’s on you.”

He lifted his hands in surrender. “Okay, I’ll accept that.”

“But I’ve gotten lots more practice, and I drive very well.”

“Very fast.”

“Well, that goes without saying.”

“I’m still going to say it.” He flashed her a smile, and she smiled back, and he was finally able to relax into their date.

Chapter Twenty

Conwasn’t sure the town knew about him kissing Britt, but Beck and Caleb sure did when he joined them to work on the sidewalk covers Tuesday morning. Apparently they’d gotten an earful from their significant others when Poppy had gotten home and texted her friends Sunday.

“Not everything has to be a happily ever after,” Con said when they protested his involvement with Britt while peeling rotten wood from the fascia in front of the hardware store. “You know, she’s here, I’m here, we have a history.” His mind had played the kiss over and over again all night long, and he wondered what would have happened if Poppy hadn’t interrupted. Wished Poppy hadn’t interrupted.

“Sure, that’s true,” Beck said. “But you’re not exactly the fling type.”

“How do you know that?” Beck had only been back in town about two years, Caleb only a few months.

“You’re just not the type. You’re too serious.”

“Look, after Britt left, I jumped into another relationship, ended up marrying her, then divorcing her. I haven’t exactly been a saint in the time since then.”

“Sure but a fling with some girl is not the same as a fling with the girl you once thought you’d spend the rest of your life with,” Caleb pointed out. “Everyone thought you would be married. So everyone will feel like they have something to say about you jumping back into that relationship. Trust me on this.”

Caleb and Sofia hadn’t exactly had a relationship in high school. Sofia had had a crush on him, and Caleb had taken advantage of that and ruined Sofia’s reputation, but yeah, when they got together a few months ago, the whole town had wanted to have a say in it.

“I don’t care.”
