“No, it’s fine. You did more than I expected last night.”
Britt met and held her gaze, wondering if she was reading something into the words. “Glad to know your expectation of me was so high.”
“Don’t get in a snit. You don’t owe this town anything, and you’ve done a lot. It’s appreciated. But I didn’t expect you to pitch in with the hands-on part.”
“I mean, I love my grandmother, but it’s been really nice to hang out with you all. I don’t have many friends my age, you know? Or many friends, really. Just co-workers and contacts.”
Sofia frowned. “Not even friends from college?”
Britt pressed her lips together. She shouldn’t have admitted that. “I’m not the best about keeping in contact, as you might have noticed. So no, I don’t keep in touch with them.”
“Sounds like you’re just not the best friend. You know you have to have balance in your life, right? You can’t just work all the time.”
“I’m—slowing down. I just had a lot of work to do to run my own business, a lot of contacts to make, a lot of networking to do. I mean, pretty impressive to get this much done by the age of thirty.”
“Sure, but if that’s your whole life, what’s the point? Money?”
“Money’s nice, yes. Reputation.”
“Not love, not friendship, not family. Do you ever want to have kids?”
“I don’t know. Sometimes I do, like I’ll see Lacey’s babies, you know, but honestly, most of the time, I don’t think about it.”
“I hope you thought about it last night.” Sofia motioned toward the rooms behind her with her thumb.
This time Britt couldn’t control her blush. “We were careful.” Part of her, just a tiny part, thought about what it would be like to go home, find out she was pregnant, and come back to surprise Con. She thought he might be happy about it, but that was all she was going to allow herself to think. “I’d better get back to the house to check on Grandma, but if you need any more help, you know, I’m here until next weekend.”
“I’m sure I’ll think of something,” Sofia said, leaning back in her chair and watching as Britt remembered to pull out her phone and take snaps of the murals, moving closer to get a better picture of the faces, and yes, Con’s face.
She didn’t look back at Sofia, just waved and walked out of the courtyard.
Chapter Twenty Three
Brittwas fairly certain everyone in town knew by the time she got home that she and Con had slept together. It was only a matter of time before her grandmother heard, and she would not mince words. Britt was pretty sure her grandmother’s hopes would be raised that Britt would come back to stay, and Britt needed to nip that idea in the bud.
“Did you have a nice night?” Millie asked when Britt set out the light lunch for her.
