With a groan, I sat across from her and kicked out my legs. “You really know how to kill a mood, don’t you?”
She ignored me and forged on. “If we do this, it can only be for the summer.”
“Sounds like a good plan,” I agreed.
“No harm, no foul.”
“Exactly. When I leave on August sixth, we’ll go our separate ways.”
“Perfect.” She held up her index finger. “Number one. Don’t stick your nose in my business.”
If the situation demanded, I would do it again. But I nodded as if I fully intended to follow her silly rules.
“I heard you ran into Chad Miller.”
My brows shot up. “Where did you hear that?”
“From Kelsey. I saw her at the gas station. Are you still hooking up with her?”
I shook my head no.
“That’s rule number two. If you’re hooking up with me, you’re not hooking up with anyone else.”
“Possessive. I like it.”
“I’m serious. And that goes for blow jobs too.”
“My dick is all yours. Got it.”
“Rule number three. No more punching walls. And I don’t want you getting into fights for me either.”
“Because you can take care of it on your own.”
“Exactly.”
Which led me to my next question. I needed to know. “Is it true? Did that asshole really make a bet?”
She averted her head. “Yeah, he did.”
“What happened?”
Evie gripped her bottom lip between her teeth. “It was all a game, you know? The whole thing. The more I resisted, the more he wanted me.”
That sounded familiar. But I wasn’t playing high school games, and I would never make a bet or force a girl to do something she didn’t want. “Did he force you?”
Not meeting my eye, she ripped a thread from the frayed hem of her shorts and wrapped it around her finger. “I went to a party at his house. I got drunk and went up to his bedroom with him.”
My jaw clenched, and I read between the lines. “He took advantage of you when you were drunk.”
She shrugged one shoulder. “I didn’t fight him, and I didn’t say no.”
I found that hard to believe. She was trying to pass this whole thing off as if it had been no big deal. “That doesn’t sound like you.”
“Maybe I was more trusting back then.” She lifted her head and met my eye. “Or maybe I was just stupid enough to believe that he cared about me. I thought he actually liked me. That’s what he made me believe, but as soon as he won the bet, he dumped me.”
No wonder she didn’t trust me. But one of the many things that set me apart from Chad Fucking Miller was that Icaredabout Evie, and I liked her exactly as she was. Tough, strong, and feisty with a dash of vulnerability she tried to hide.
“But don’t worry,” she said. “I got my revenge.”
