Her blood ran cold. “Blitz,” he called, his voice smooth and much too calm. “Didn’t think you’d run this far. But I knew that we’d find each other again. That’s how soulmates work.”
She froze, her throat working, her hands tightening on the grocery bags until the paper crinkled. “Leave me alone, Reid,” she managed, her voice shaking.
He stepped off the curb, slow and deliberate. “Can’t do that. You belong with me. Always have. I let you go once. That was my mistake.”
Before Blitz could move, a familiar shadow closed in from her side. Monster’s hand shot out, shoving her gently behind him, his broad body blocking Reid’s view of her. His voice was low, lethal. “Back the fuck up,” he growled.
Reid’s smirk faltered as he looked Monster over. “This doesn’t concern you.”
Monster’s laugh was humorless, dark. “Everything about her concerns me.”
“This isn’t your business,” Reid said, trying to make himself sound tougher than he was.
Monster tilted his head, his voice dropping into something dangerous. “It’s my business when Blitz looks as scared as she does. So, I’m going to protect her from you because you seem to make her afraid. Why is that?” he asked.
“He’s been stalking me, and I guess he finally caught up to me,” Blitz whispered into his ear. Monster turned immediately, his hands gripping Blitz’s shoulders, his gaze fierce. “You okay?” She nodded shakily, tears threatening to spill. “I’m not going to let him lay one finger on you. Can you go over to my truck and get into it for me?” he asked, handing her the keys. She chanceda look around Monster to where Reid seemed to be waiting for them to finish their conversation. Don’t look at him, look at me.”
“Come with me,” she begged, taking the keys from Monster and pulling his hand into her own.
“I’ll be right behind you,” he promised.
“No, he won’t let you follow me,” she insisted. “He’s not as useless as he looks,” she loudly whispered.
Reid chuckled, garnering both of their attention. “Thanks for that compliment, honey,” he said. “Listen, I don’t have all day to stand around here and wait for you two to figure out what’s going to happen next. I just wanted you to know that I’m in town now, honey, and I’ll see you again soon.”
“Don’t you fucking come near her,” Monster shouted as Reid chuckled and turned to get into the car he had been leaning against earlier. He gave a wave out the Driver’s window, and she shuddered at the idea of him making good on his threats against her.
As she watched him leave the parking lot, Blitz finally allowed herself to exhale, leaning into Monster’s chest. For the first time in a long time, she felt safe. Reid might have come all this way for her, but he’d just found out that it wasn’t going to be as easy to get to her now. She just hoped that hiding behind Monster didn’t end up costing her later. Reid seemed to have a way of getting what he wanted in life, and right now, he seemed crazy enough to want her.
Monster
He knew that both he and Drifter were playing with fire, but giving in to Blitz’s demands was the only way that they would be able to have her. The two of them had waited her out for over a week now, hoping that she’d come to her senses, but she hadn’t. He and Drifter met at the funeral home last night, after Drifter had closed for the night. It always freaked him out to be in that place, especially with all the guys around the bar talking about how the funeral home was haunted.
They sat down and went over a few rules for sharing Blitz because they both knew that was going to be the only way that they could both have her. Sure, having her there would have made the whole conversation easier, but neither of them seemed to ever take the easy route.
The night essentially ended with the two of them agreeing that there were no rules that they could come up with to make sharing her any easier on either of them. They both knew that there would be jealousy, but they promised to try not to act upon it, even going as far as to agree to sit down and talk things out when that happened. He wasn’t sure that any of their rules orplans to give Blitz what she wanted would work, but they agreed on one thing—they had to try.
Finding Blitz standing in the middle of the grocery store’s parking lot, looking scared out of her mind, was nearly his undoing. He had a pretty good idea that the person causing her fear was the man standing in the corner of the lot, staring her down. There was no way that he was going to let any asshole look at her that way. He didn’t give a fuck if they hadn’t spoken in a week, and she was probably still pissed that he and Drifter had turned down her proposition for them to share her.
When she told him that the asshole intimidating her had been stalking, he wanted to get her into his truck to safety and beat the shit out of the guy all at the same time. But her pleas to have him go with her just about broke his heart. She thought that he couldn’t handle himself, but he could.
“Come on, baby,” he ordered, taking the bag from her arms.
“Oh, um, I have Drifter’s truck,” she said. “I can just drive myself back to his house. I don’t need a ride.”
“There is no fucking way that I’m letting you go anywhere alone, baby,” he said. “If that asshole followed you all the way here, he’s not going to just give up and go home now without you,” Monster insisted.
“So, you’re going to babysit me then?” she asked. “I don’t need you to do that, Monster.”
“Too fucking bad,” he said. “I’m taking you back to the clubhouse, and we’re going to call Drifter. Where’s Josie?” he asked.
“She’s at school,” Blitz said. He opened the truck door for her, and she looked it over as though it had offended her in some way. He held his damn breath waiting for her to decide if she was going to get in or not. She sighed and climbed into the truck, and he let out the breath he had been holding as he slammed the door shut behind her.
He rounded the truck and slipped into the driver’s seat. “Do you think that he knows where I’m staying?” she asked. Is that why you asked where Josie is? Oh God, I’ve put her in danger, haven’t I?” She was spiraling, and that was the last thing he needed.
Monster grabbed her hand into his own, pulling them over onto his lap. “You didn’t do anything, baby. You didn’t put anyone in danger. But I do need to know who that guy is and why he followed you here.”
“We need to tell Drifter about this, too. If Reid is hanging around town, he’ll know about you both since the three of us have spent time together,” she said, a small sob escaping her chest.
