He set down the sheaf of papers in his hand. “Mood?” His voice was frosty.

“Yes. Mood.”

His eyes narrowed then he smiled, sitting back in his chair, fingers steepled. Kailigh eyed him warily.

“I had a bed brought in here,” Maddugh said. “That technically makes this study my bedroom.”

Oh. Hell. “Well.” She casually backed up a step. “I can see you’re not ready to talk. So I’ll just-“

She’d forgotten how fast a dragon in human form could move. He reached her before she’d taken three steps towards the door, snatching her up into his arms.

“Remember our agreement?” he asked.

Kailigh swore. Of course she did. It was why she’d been trying to back out of the room. He strode towards a corner of the office where a screen was placed, and pushed it aside. She hadn’t noticed when entering his office, but in the opposite corner of the window, and in the dark there was, indeed, a bed hiding behind the screen.

“Outside of the bedroom,” he said, “I will defer to you. Inside-“ Maddugh dropped her on the mattress. “I am your only Master.”

Kai bit her lip. “I don’t think we should have sex again before we’re wed.”

His hand snaked inside his vest, withdrew a tiny object. Grabbing her hand, he slid a ring on her finger. “I pronounce us man and wife.”

“What!” Kailigh stared at the ring. Gold, with a gigantic ruby surrounded by tiny winking diamonds. “You can’t do that.”

“I am the law here.”

“I didn’t say I do.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t realize you had to.” He lowered his head, nipped at her lips. “Wife.”

A vague, disgruntled sense of dissatisfaction turned her lips down at the corners. “But-“

“We’ll have a wedding,” he said. “In a few days. But we’re still married because I said so.”

It was absolutely ridiculous. “I don’t know of any civilized society where you don’t have to have a document and witnesses and some kind of legal court proceeding in order to get married.”

“Never said dragons were civilized. Stop protesting. Just start planning your dress.”
