BLURB

We watch her through the trees, and sometimes we let her see them.

Each month Bryn walks the forest’s ever changing paths between her mother’s cottage and her gran’s with a trail of abused, rescued children in tow, determined to find them a new, safer existence.

With every step along the ever changing paths designed just for her Bryn feels the forest’s eyes on her. She’s learned one thing in her years safely treading the forest floors: never look back.

Until one day, she does.

Until the forest sees her. Touches her.

Because there are worse evils than the shadows between the trees. And if we catch her, we might destroy her.

PROLOGUE

Once upon a time there was a girl who lived near the forest. Isn’t that how all the best fairytales start? There’s always a pretty, innocent girl. And a dark, deep secret. An evil demon to fight off or ward away. You know the ones. The nightmarish sort that have a fatal flaw.

And a charming prince to whisk the pure one away from the all encompassing darkness before it taints her perfect soul.

Then they have their happily ever after, and all is well before midnight.

But the truth about fairy tales is that they are dark, twisted stories, created around humanity's greatest fears. Often the villain is the person closest to the heroine, and the monsters are the ones who wait… and those are the lesser of all the evils she’ll have to face.

Except for us. We were born of the shadows. We exist in their depths.

And we watch her.

Bryn.

Our perfect little woodland princess.

Only she’s not a princess, and she’s not innocent. One way or the other, we will have her. It just depends on who cracks first. Who is willing to take their obsession beyond the voyeur’s realm.

A standing bet, if you will.

And in the forest, the darkest nightmares are the ones who cast the deepest shadows.

For now, we wait.
