Need to get to Cain, to heal him somehow.

But darkness overtook me, and I faded into its cool, sheltering, forgetful embrace.

Chapter 35

Cain

Phoebe slumped to theground, and her eyes rolled to the back of her head.

“No!” Summoning every bit of willpower remaining, I concentrated fiercely on breaking the demonic ether restraining me.

White-hot heat burned through my bones, and little by little, the black ether holding me prisoner slowly seemed to recede.

Hope stirred in my chest. If I can free myself, I can get to Phoebe and take her to Earth.

As if it sensed my concentration slipping, the shadowy power solidified, gaining strength.

No. I will not lose the most precious person I’d ever met.I betrayed her once, but never again. No cost could be too great if it meant I could save her. God, help me.Please.

Fury lit my veins from the inside and fueled my new power of light. It shone like the sun—fierce, hot, and deadly.

Agony tore through my back, and more blood pushed up my esophagus, the taste metallic and salty.

“I don’t think so,” Malachi singsonged as he swaggered toward me, holding up a hand to fling more shadows at me.

Out of my peripheral vision, Lucian wrestled with the newly arrived angel, but I couldn’t take my attention from Malachi as he doubled down on his effort to keep me prisoner.

Shadows rose from the sand and scattered rocks to tighten their hold on me, becoming an invisible hand trying to shove me face-first onto the ground.

My biceps and quads shook with fatigue. Already weak and dizzy, a few more minutes would see me dead from blood loss. And then Phoebe’s soul would never be allowed to leave this place.

It’s now or never.

Malachi, breathing heavily, stood above and jerked my head back. “I. Win.” His face twisted into a triumphant smile as his burning sword appeared in his other hand. “Say goodbye, Cain. You might appear as one of us, but you’ll always be the half-breed, the beggar looking for the little morsels Lucian drops in the dirt.”

“And as long as you work for him, you’ll never win either, Malachi.” I laughed, unwilling to show my frustration at not being able to break through his hold.
