But why?I didn’t know anyone who looked so—
“Oh, God,” I murmured, clenching my pendant with one hand and raising the other to cover my mouth. Shock jolted through my body, followed by a spike of hot pleasure. “I can’t believe he really came.”
“Huh?” Tara tore her attention from the man as he prowled through the crowd, a slight scowl turning his lips downward.
I cleared my throat, unable to speak because, at that moment, from behind the mask, Cain’s unique, silver-blue irises lasered me under his electric stare. An unseen current of power seemed to fly between the distance of his body and mine.
A slow, pleased smile spread across the visible portion of his face. His lips formed one word.
Phoebe.
Letting go of my necklace, I could only stand in open-eyed wonder at the stalking predator closing in on his prey.
Me.
Chapter 17
Cain
The room, the people, the entire world disappeared until only Phoebe shone in the darkness—a burst of bright color beckoning me to her side.
I parted the sea of unimportant people, my attention never leaving her face.
Standing on the stairs, with a tiny O of surprise on her lips and eyes wide, she looked like a true angel. Normally, this would’ve fueled my vengeance. Not this time, though.
And if she were a real angel, I’d be in serious trouble.Because I didn’t know how I’d react.
This thought, more than any other, stirred my uneasiness. My goal is to get wings, realwings, not those flimsy things she’s wearing.I slowed my steps, letting my stare follow the curves of her body. She is quite beautiful, though.
Her face relaxed, and she gave a tentative smile.
My heart squeezed. She’s an assignment, nothing more. Get the information, deliver her to Lucian, claim my prize. It’s as simple as that.
I let out a harsh breath and ground my teeth together. Phoebe, though fascinating and delectable, would never tempt me from my plan.
Stopping at the bottom of the last step, I threw her a grin. “Hello.”
