I nodded then realized he couldn’t see me. “This is…” The shrieking wind buffeted my body. The Harley rumbled into the night, and light shone from the moon, shrouding the landscape in glowing silver and grays. “It’s amazing, Viktor. Such freedom.”
His body tightened when I said his name then he relaxed. “Itisfreeing.”
City lights from Mesa Palms began appearing on the horizon, their yellow glow a reminder that, even in the middle of this harsh, beautiful landscape, man asserted his dominance.
“Angel.” His voice crackled in my ear. “Would you be willing to give me another shot at a dinner date if I manage to behave myself?”
I laid my helmeted head against his spine.Everyone deserves a second chance.“Yes, butcanyou just go into a restaurant and make an order? Won’t people pass out or something if they see you?”
“Probably, but I have somewhere a tad more intimate in mind.”
“Oh.” A frown pulled at my mouth. “I’m not sure that’s a good—”
He chuckled, the sound rich and genuine. “Trust me, it’s intimate but not completely secluded. There’ll be others nearby should you need to escape from a certain naughty rock star.”
Nodding, I adjusted my hips and moved my fingers to his lower stomach for traction. Each ab muscle under his shirt felt rock hard and delicious.
“Though, if you keep doing that”—he let go of a handlebar and covered my hand with his— “I just might change my mind about protecting your virtue.”
“Don’t make me sic Marky on you again.” I gave his shoulder a playful swat, enjoying the light banter.
His neck twisted so I could see his helmeted profile. “He’ll have to do more than pee if he wants to get rid of me this time.”
A laugh bubbled out of me. I tilted my face to gaze at the gorgeous arm of the Milky Way. It seemed as if every star shone just for us, lighting a path only we could see.
Thrills shot through me.Is it possible there might be a future for him and me, together?
But no, I couldn’t jump the gun, not until I told him my entire sordid story. Nervous dread overrode the excitement, and I shivered, hugging him closer to my chest.
Chapter 20
Viktor Farrow
Disappointment overrode the bliss of having Angel wrapped around me when I turned onto the street leading to the house. If I have my way, we’ll ride across the state. The feel of her hands on me and her easy trust in my handling of the bike did something to me. How long had it been since anyone hadtrustedme so blindly?
Years. People learned not to expect too much from a junkie alcoholic, and they certainly never dared put their lives in my hands.
Yet here I sit with this captivating woman wrapping me in her scent and warmth.
I drove to the gate, entered the security code, and coasted into the garage. Once I shut off the motor, I tore the helmet from my head and lowered the kickstand.
Angel loosened her hold, and I held in a sigh. Whatever else I did tonight, maybe I could at least get her hands on me again.
The snap of her helmet strap releasing echoed in the humongous garage. “Do I need to get off first?”
“Well, that’s typically how I’d start the night.”
She smacked my shoulder again. “You know what I mean.” Her voice, light and playful, filled me with confidence.
“I knowexactlywhat you meant, and my answer is yes either way.”
A soft giggle fluttered near my ear, and she used my upper arm for leverage as she lifted herself off the behemoth.
I tore myself off the iron horse, too, then grabbed the helmet from her hand and placed it on the seat with mine. “Come on. Let’s go sneak a bite to eat. I’m famished.”
“Sneak?” Her eyes widened as she looked around, probably taking in the array of shiny new vehicles, including the cat-piss smelling SUV courtesy of Marky.Little bugger.“Why do we have to sneak?”
Genuine alarm rounded her eyes, and I snorted. She was fuckingadorable. “Poor choice of verbiage.” I wrestled the roses and candy from the bike, handed them to her then slipped my fingers into the crook of her arm. “I just mean I’m going to attempt to skate past my bandmates and whatever debaucheries or depravities they’re partaking in while we head to the kitchen.” A buffet or delicacies always awaited anyone who happened to wander into the area. Musicians kept weird hours, and it wouldn’t do to let us go hungry.
