A high screech flew from its mouth, and the dragon’s lips pulled back as if laughing.
“Whatever—” Margaret huffed into the room and stopped. “Oh, I see Sacha’s met our house pet.” She handed Fin a stuffed taco, filled to the brim with all the fixings, then returned to the kitchen.
“Yum. Yum.” He waggled the food near Cyan. “It’s your favorite.”
Stretching his neck, the dragon tried to nip it from Fin’s grip, but the man pulled it back just in time.
His forked tongue licked his teeth, and then he leaped into the air with wings spread wide.
“Now, you can have this if you take it to your perch.”
Air from the dragon’s movement rushed toward Sacha. A tiny network of veins crisscrossed the translucent skin.
“He’s so beautiful.”
The creature let out a gentle screech, and Fin placed the taco into his mouth, careful to keep his fingers away from the razor teeth.
With the food firmly planted between his jaws, Cyan flew up the staircase with shreds of lettuce and cheese trailing in the wake.
“Gods, he makes me weary.” Fin’s shoulders sagged.
“I love him.” Sacha chuckled. “And I think he likes me.”
He gave her a dark look.
“Maybe you should try being less grouchy around him.”Did I really hold a live dragon? Does this mean I believe his story?Hell, maybe when I tripped and fell in the puddle outside, I knocked myself unconscious and am in a coma.
“He’s a little arsehole, but he’s been in our family since he was born.”
“So”—Sacha cleared her throat—“if youreallyare from another world, why are you still here, in this one?”
The scowl returned, and he pivoted away. “I’d rather not discuss it right now.” His words were icy and detached. He leaned into the doorway of the kitchen. “Margaret? Have you prepared Sacha’s room?”
“Yes,” Margaret’s muffled voice floated through the air. “Preparations finished and good to go.” The woman remained hidden from view.
Why did he suddenly turn frigid? All I asked was how he ended up here, on this planet.Talk about a moody nutjob.
Was sheseriouslygoing to stay the night in this old tower with these two strangers and a bona fidedragon? Did she have much of a choice?
“Lovely.” He threw a quick glance over his shoulder, the grimace replaced with a secret grin. “Please show her the way when she’s ready. I need to”—a flash of desire shone from his eyes, and he tongued the scar above his lip—“make my own arrangements.”
Chapter 14
Fin
Asparkofmagiclicked around his fingertip. Just when he was beginning to get comfortable, the little minx had to ask why he was still here.
I’m here because of your wretched, evil father.
With great control, though, he’d shoved the retort deep down. He headed toward the stairs then ascended. The sound of Margaret and Sacha speaking faded. Stepping into a long corridor, he passed a candle holder mounted to the stone. The flame flickered at his passing, making his shadow appear larger on the opposite wall.
The old nanny was right, though. Sachawassweet, despite being raised by such a heartless father. He hadn’t meant to show his magic, but she’d taken it better than he’d expected. Even though she was naturally-born of this modern, technical world, she didn’t run screaming at the first sign of the paranormal—or his dragon.
Reaching his door, he paused, then swiveled to the opposite room across the hall. He placed the pad of a finger to the doorknob and whispered a spell of access. It didn’t require much more than a trickle of power and would open at his touch even if the little princess decided to lock him out.
Shouldn’t I give her privacy?A low, throaty chuckle echoed in the hallway. No, this was his domain, after all, and he had delicious plans in store for them both.
