“As you wish.” She hobbled up the stairs.

“I’m sorry, little rat. I should’ve been prepared.” An index finger slid under the robe, and he pressed the tip into the jagged hole and winced.

First things first, though. The bullet had to come out before he could storm the Ninette mansion.

“Just hold on, love. I’m coming for you.”

Chapter 25

Sacha

Vitoturnedtostareat Sacha. “You’re no better than your mother.” His nostrils flared.

The SUV pulled into the large garage and Matteo stepped out.

“What?” His words made her heart thump. “What does this have to do with Mamma?”

Her father shook his head and eyed her bare shoulders. One side of his mouth lifted in disgust.

“Get out.” Matteo yanked open the car door, grabbed her by the elbow, and jerked her to her feet.

“I can walk by myself.” The towel slipped, but she caught it just in time and tucked the corner under an arm.

“Take the little zoccolato her room. I’m done with this farce.”

Matteo’s hard fingers dug into her elbow, and he hauled her inside the house.

Sacha didn’t offer much resistance. She was worried for Fin.

Please let him be okay.At least there didn’t seem to be too much blood, so that was a good sign, she hoped.

If he was from another world or reality, though, did that mean his system was different? What if he didn’t heal like the humans on Earth—what if he needed medical attention her world wasn’t capable of providing, like magic?

These worries swirled inside her mind. Sharp pain, like a million needles stabbing her chest, almost doubled her over. The agony twisted her heart until she could barely breathe. If she’d never tried to escape the wedding in the first place, she wouldn’t have met Fin. He’d still be safe in his tower—unharmed and unaware.

And I’d be Mrs. Lombardi.

It was a sacrifice she would’ve given without a second thought.

Her footsteps echoed in the tall, wide hallway leading to her room. A couple of housekeepers saw her assisted approach. One of the younger women’s eyes widened and her lower jaw dropped open.

Leading her and Matteo down the corridor, her father’s attention landed on the frozen staff. “Get back to work.” His voice bellowed, and a finger stabbed in the workers’ direction.

The employees scurried away like cockroaches in a bright room.

Sacha wished she could disappear, too.

“I’ve never been so embarrassed in my life. Do you know we’re now the laughingstock of Chicago?” He twisted the handle to her bedroom and shoved her inside.

Vicious glee rose inside Sacha. The mighty Vito Ninnette is this week’s joke in the underworld.

She tried to hide a smile. With an outward calm she didn’t feel on the inside, she settled on top of the bed, running a hand over the goose down comforter.

He shook his head with hard jerks, and his lip curled. “Put some fucking clothes on, for God’s sake.” He threw a ring onto the floor. “Lorenzo and the priest are on their way, and then you’ll be out of my hair.”

Turning on his heel, he stepped across the threshold, then reached behind his back to pull the door closed. He paused midway through the action and clucked his tongue against the roof of his mouth.

The breath in Sacha’s lungs felt heavy and thick. She was desperate for him to leave, so she could let her tears fall. But he wasn’t finished.
