Something bothered her, though. Shouldn’t she feel excited, or at the least—curious—about tonight? Instead, she was a ball of nerves on high alert. Fin’s homey tower and quiet rooms popped into her mind and she stuffed down a pang of sadness.
Stop it. He’s probably in his world now, glad to be free of this mafia princess. That part of my life is over.
Slipping on a pair of black, strappy high heels, Sacha stood and left the house.
Chapter 36
Fin
FinteleportedtoSacha’saddress. With no car in the drive, he assumed she was gone. Slipping an invisibility spell over his body, he waited in the front yard under a cedar tree.
Before leaving, Cyan had begged to come along and help. Against his better judgment, Fin relented. The dragon’s sense of smell and keen eyesight were far superior than Fin’s, even with spell enhancements. He just hoped the little miscreant kept out of sight and behaved himself.
Tapping the tracking spell in his mind, he concentrated on Lorenzo’s location. The man was close, but not heading toward Sacha’s house. This would be so much easier if the man wasn’t on the move. Teleportation required fixed locations, otherwise the caster might find themselves trapped in a wall or twenty feet underground.
“What are you doing, you toad?” Fear gripped Fin’s heart.
What if Lorenzo planned on confronting Sacha somewhere else, like Margaret had warned? A darker thought drifted into Fin’s mind.
What if he wants to hurt my little rat?
Cyan slipped his pointed head from the inside of the suit jacket and squeaked.
“I don’tknowwhere he’s going, but it’s certainly not here.”
The dragon let out a low trill, tilting his snout toward Fin.
“Yes, that could work.” He rubbed his jaw. “If you can follow her trail by scent, I can keep tabs on Lorenzo through the tracer spell. Send me a message through the bond the moment you find her.”
Hard scales rasped against the suit’s thick material and Cyan clambered from his resting spot and soared a few feet into the air.
“Cyan, wait.” Fin twirled a wrist. “Come here for a second.”
Yellow eyes hovered near his, their stare intent and unblinking.
“Be careful, okay?” He stroked the side of Cyan’s neck. “Even though you’re the biggest pain in the ass I’ve ever known, I wouldn’t want to lose you. Understand?”
Hot, sulfuric steam puffed into his face, causing Fin’s eyes to water and his throat to close. When he waved away the putrid cloud, only the sight of a red, barbed tail swishing in the air could be seen.
Little arsehole.A trickle of amusement made his lips quirk.
With Cyan’s help locating Sacha, it was imperative for Fin to get close to Lorenzo.
Panic spurred him into action, and he fished around in a pocket for the cellphone Margaret insisted he take. Recalling her crash course on how to use the blasted thing, he opened an app on the phone and requested a cab, then dropped the invisibility spell.
Ten minutes later, an older-modeled, yellow sedan appeared.
Fin jumped inside. “Head north.” The tracer worked like thenever lostspell he’d used to find the stolen ring. Instead of a visible trail to follow, though, a tugging sensation pulled inside his head, like following a pulled thread.
The male driver started the meter and pulled onto the road. “You got an address for me?”
“Just drive.” It was all Fin could do not to snarl.
It took a few minutes, but the closer he moved to Lorenzo, the easier it was to follow his trail. Two streets over, and the spell’s thread gave a forceful yank when they closed in on a dark red SUV. Lorenzo was inside, he could feel his lifeforce bound to the enchantment Fin had casted weeks ago.
“Stay behind that red vehicle and keep following. Don’t let it out of your sight.”
The driver flashed a quick glance into his rearview mirror, then gave a curt nod.
