Her gaze traveled back to Rynar, who looked at her expectantly. She caught a vulnerable glimmer in his eyes. But he blinked and it vanished.
She must have been imagining things.
“What do you say?” he asked, voice open and curious.
One word and her problems would vanish.
But she’d have to agree to a secret marriage.
To her Deruzian boss.
Alovelessmarriage.
It seemed there was still a bit of optimism left in her. Alissia suddenly realized that while she hadn’t seriously thought about marriage, she’d always pictured…more.
A heartfelt declaration. Kneeling. A ring that was just right for her. Jumping for joy with fresh, happy tears filling her eyes. A kiss that would blow her away.
A kiss.
Thekiss.
“How can I marry someone I’ve never even kissed?” she mumbled to herself, barely moving her lips.
But, of course, Rynar heard. His Deruzian super-hearing didn’t miss anything.
He took a step toward her. “We can fix that right now.”

RYNAR
They hadn’t even touched until now. Not once, ever since they’d started working together, almost two years ago.
So why, exactly, had Rynar proposed they’d jump straight to one of the most intimate things two beings could do together?
“I definitely heard you right this time,” Alissia said with a small, uneven laugh. Her cheeks had gone a slight shade of pink.
“You brought up a problem, I thought of a solution.” Yes, good. That sounded logical.Of coursethat’s why he’d suggested they kiss.
It was the simplest solution.
He breathed a sigh of relief he hoped Alissia didn’t notice.
“This would be a fake marriage, we don’t have to kiss–if you don’t want to,” she said.
“If it would make you feel more at ease…” Rynar hesitated, perhaps for the first time in his life. All of his big words had vacated the office.
There was so much at stake. One wrong word could topple everything. His working relationship with Alissia, his inheritance, the plans he had with it.
Perhaps he was the most selfish of beings, but Rynar still wanted to work with her, whether she said yes or no to his proposal.
“I mean…” She hesitated, too. It felt completely foreign on her. She was so decisive all the time, it felt like Rynar was getting a peek underneath that armor. “If wedoget married–and I’m not saying yes right now. But if we do, we’d have to kiss at the ceremony, you know, acting like the adoring couple. Actors need to rehearse.”
“It would be the logical thing to do.” So the plan could work. And that’s what Rynar would keep on telling himself. That it was therightdecision.
Not that he was suddenly paying very close attention to Alissia’s lips as she spoke.
“Right,” she laughed and it didn’t sound forced this time. “We do like to plan, don’t we?”
