“So you’re saying he’d make an awful lawyer.”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You meant it.”

“Perhaps. But I didn’t lie.”

Alissia fell back against the armchair. “I want that super power.”

“I suspect you already have it. It just needs to be set free.”

Alissia averted her gaze. She still didn’t know how to react when people noticed she was smart. Or good at her job. Or any of the things she thought–deep, deep down–she was maybe decent at doing. Maybe it was time to learn.

“If you can’t lie, what about the ceremony?” she asked. Anything to get the focus off her.

“We’ll have very specific vows.”

She huffed an incredulous laugh. “You’ve thought of everything, haven’t you?”

“It was alongweekend.” He smirked. “I still haven’t decided what I’m going to wear, though.”

A bubble of laughter escaped Alissia. “You’re funny.”

“You seem surprised.”

“You don’t joke like that at work.”

“You’re right, I don’t. Doug still laughs, though,” he said. “I wonder if he’ll laugh when I tell him he isn’t getting the promotion.”

Alissia’s ambitious senses tingled. “Who is?”

“I can’t reveal that yet.” His stare turned intense, even as a jagged smile upturned the corners of his lips.

“Fine.” Alissia wouldn’t hope he meant her. No, she would not. Nope. “I’ll just have to keep my big ears peeled for the big announcement.”

Rynar frowned. “Your ears are perfectly proportionate.”

“Why, mister Te’Oken, was that a compliment?” Honestly. She really didnotknow how to handle compliments. “You’re going to make me blush.”

He took another sip of his drink. “Blush away, it looks good on you.”

With those two little words, the air in the room shifted. It became electrified, like it had back in his office. Suddenly, all Alissia could focus on were Rynar’s lips.

They were alone.

In his house.

A house which had some very lush and luxurious surfaces, which would feel just amazing against her back as he–

Alissia shot up as if scalded. “It’s getting late. How are we going to tackle organizing the wedding?”

Her voice didn’t waver once. Score. Now if that flutter in her chest would vanish, that would be great.

Rynar set down his glass and rose to his full height. A Deruzian gentleman.

“I’d like to organize the dinner after the ceremony, if that’s alright with you,” he said.

Alissia looked up at him. Her mind flashed back to his office, after their kiss.
