“What are you craving right now?” he asked.

You, she almost—almost—replied. “What do you mean?”

“Food, drink, those small fried things you call snacks.”

“Hmm…” What hadn’t she eaten in a long, long–“A burger.”

“What kind?”

“A big, juicy beef burger, with cheese, and a large tomato slice.” Just talking about it made her stomach rumble enough that Zinny fidgeted in her arms at the sound, his weird metallic collar rattling. “And lettuce. Oh, and onion jam.Spicyonion jam.”

Rynar turned to the machine. “Two of those. I’m actually curious about thato-nionjam.”

Alissia barely had time to frown before the cabinet began buzzing. Less than 10 seconds later, its front slid down. Alissia smelled the deliciousness before her eyes feasted on two of the largest, juiciest burgers she’d ever seen. The cheese was melted to perfection, drooping onto the black plates.

She swallowed thickly. “What in the–”

“Instant meal.” Rynar smirked. “You tell it what you want and it delivers.”

“Are you telling me you can just tell it you want a four course meal and it delivers in a few seconds?”

The cabinet began to buzz again.

“No, no,” Alissia said quickly and the cabinet fell silent. Guess that answered her question. “That is…seriously cool. I could go for some fries, too. Cheesy fries.”

“It is.” Rynar laughed as he picked up the plates, setting them down onto the counter. “Though it still has issues with Deruzians stews, they always come out too thick. And it has a mind of its own sometimes.”

“What do you mean?”

The cabinet closed and hummed, before opening again and revealing two sides of fries. And next to them–

“The meal you have requested is high in saturated fats and sodium Nitrites,” the cabinet said in a metallic, matter-of-fact voice. “I have added some pieces of fruit and vegetables to balance your nutrient intake for the day.”

“That’s what I mean. Nazyn installed the feature at Darcy’s suggestion.” Rynar took out the bowls filled with cucumbers and orange slices. “These are the vegetables and fruits I’ve discovered most resemble the porto and castra ones we have on Deruzia. A bit sweeter.”

“So not only can it make food on the spot, it also helps me eat decent food? I love it.” Alissia huffed an incredulous laugh and spun around the kitchen; she’d have to thank Darcy later for her suggestion.

Alissia wasn’t exactly close to the new researcher in Nazyn’s department–who had become his girlfriend in a massive scandal Alien Inc. still had to deal with–but she liked Darcy. Especially since she’d found out what her ex-boss had done to her. And what he kept on doing–the publications Richard Dyson, disgraced former CEO of Archam Tech, had ties with kept on attacking Alien Inc. for the stupidest reasons. Last week, they’d ran an article about Alien Inc. cleaning its windows once per week–what if the cleaning liquid poisoned the city?

Ridiculous. Kiara, from the PR department, was constantly getting calls to solve the issues. Poor thing, she also had that huge party coming up. Alissia didn’t know when Kiara got the chance to sleep.

“What else can this house do?” she asked. She was like a kid in an amusement park. A very posh, clean, and organized amusement park, but still.

“Once we’re done with this feast…” Rynar squeezed one of the orange slices onto the counter. One of the tiles behind it popped open. A tiny little copper robot that looked curiously like an overturned teacup whizzed out. It even had little beady eyes, which it used to scan the orange juice. It slid over it with a cute little dance, absorbing all the liquid. Then it scurried back into its hole with a satisfied beep. “The house cleans up after us.”

By this point, Alissia’s mouth hung open. “Your house is not only gorgeous, it has little robots in its walls?”

“And self-cleaning floors and windows.”

“So it basically takes care of itself.”

“We do love self-sufficiency.” Rynar tilted his head to the side with a smirk. Alissia suddenly felt hotter. “And that’s not even the best part.”

Alissia eyed the burgers with unrestrained craving. “I don’t know how you can beat that deliciousness.”

“Not me.” Rynar gazed down at Zinny as the silence stretched on. “Well, are you suddenly shy?”

Alissia could swear Zinny sighed, as his metal collar flashed with bright red oval symbols. But she definitely did not expect what came next.
