If anything, they’d seemed to think the pairing was excellent.
“If there was any female in this universe who could convince you love exists, it would have been Alissia, from what I’ve heard about her,” Deryg went on. “She does seem like the kind of female who could convince anyone to spend the rest of their lives with her.”
Rynar’s stare turned suddenly hostile. He had no idea why; it was as if some ancient instinct had roared to life. “Meaning?”
Nazyn laughed. Unusual. “You don’t have to worry, Deryg. I have come to know that look since I found out Darcy is my fated mate.”
Nazyn got a glower from Rynar, too. Who’d said anything about fated mates? He definitely hadn’t uttered the words. Out loud.
Deryg raised his arms and huffed one of his strong, bellowed laughs. “Peace, Rynar. I was only complimenting your future mate’s qualities, no need for jealousy.”
Rynar froze.
Is that what jealousy felt like? Like his entire body burned?
He was jealous, wasn’t he?
Nines, he was. Over Alissia, with whom he had a fake relationship.
What had he gotten himself into?

ALISSIA
“And after Lily stopped crying over the dress and asking what my something blue would be, she kept pestering me about our first date and was it romantic and what did you say.” Alissia sighed as she finished stacking the plates in the kitchen.
She knew Deruzians had a healthy appetite, but the mountain of oversized platters all of them had gone through tonight was overwhelming enough that she decided to help the little robots out and place the dishes on the counter.
She wondered if she could use some of the money she’d get in the divorce to install one of those cabinets in her place. Though probably not. Divorced or not, she wasn’t about to blow through the money on buying any property until she had her own paycheck to back it up. There was no point in investing in a piece of technology as advanced as that in a rented apartment.
But a girl could dream.
Rynar came to stand behind her with the used glasses. “Something utterly charming, I’m sure.”
“That you see the jungle in my eyes.” She laughed, resting her palms against the counter.
Lord, she was tired. Between the nerves of telling everyone about their fake relationship and coming up with fantasies about how said relationship had begun, Alissia was exhausted.
Rynar didn’t look all that energetic either, but he smirked her way nonetheless. “That does sound like something I would say. The jungle is beautiful and wild, which you are.”
Alissia snorted a tired laugh. “You think I’m a wild madwoman?”
“Untameable.” Rynar’s smile grew. “What else did I say towooyou?”
Alissia thought back to all the lies she’d told tonight. A part of her felt guilty for not revealing the truth to Lily, but she wasn’t harming anyone. She was helping her brother. “That I’m the smartest woman you know.”
“SmartesthumanI know.”
“And that you proposed to me under the moonlight, in a magnolia meadow, with petals falling over us.” Alissia batted her lashes. “It was very romantic, just so you know.”
“I’m sure of it. Anything else?”
“Then Lily asked me where the engagement ring was and I said something about having it resized–”
“Iwillget you an engagement ring. One that suits you perfectly.”
Now how could she not smile wider at him when he said things like that? It was humanly impossible. But then she remembered they were pretending to be the happy couple who’d just entertained their guests–and something strange Lily had mentioned.
