Then she found it. The perfect dress.

It was simple and gorgeous and hugged her curves in all the right ways. No lace, but it had some pearl embellishments onthe thick straps, holding up the corset top that melted into the flowy skirt. It had a dramatic train. Its luxurious fabric felt like caresses on her skin. And it did wonders for her waist and boobs.

Perfect.

What made her outfit even more special were the jewels. Deruzian made, in the depths of their largest volcano, Rynar had told her. She wore a ruby necklace that cascaded from her clavicle down to her decolte, paired with long earrings, each with five rubies.

“Rubies bring good fortune on Deruzia,” Rynar had told her. “Happy brides always wear them.”

It was her way of blending human and Deruzian customs today.

Alissia looked like a happy bride, but that didn’t mean she felt like one. She was nervous, with flutters in her stomach and shivers down her spine.

If she didn’t know any better, she might have mistaken these sensations for excitement.

“Then why are you rushing?” Damian went on, making Alissia’s heart constrict.

“I’m not rushing, I’ve known Rynar for ages.” She busied herself by twirling her curls. She couldn’t look at her brother right now.

Lying to him was torture. They told each other everything. For the longest time, it had only been the two of them looking out for each other. And that’s what Alissia was doing now–looking out for her little brother.

Though he wasn’t so little anymore. In his black tux, with his long hair tied securely behind his back, and a serious expression on his tense face, Damian had grown up more than Alissia had realized.

It’s not that she’d thought Damian would babble to anyone if she told him the truth. But then he’d know she was marryingRynar to help pay for his tuition and her bar exam. At least according to the contract.

Damian didn’t deserve to live with that guilt. Alissia would carry the burden for both of them. And her feelings were too jumbled anyway.

How could she explain the situation to Damian when she barely grasped it herself? She liked Rynar. Maybe more than she should.

“You always complained about him,” Damian said, coming to stand behind her. He tried to catch her gaze in the mirror, but Alissia pretended to ignore it.

“Opposites attract, you know,” she said. “And I didn’t just complain. I always said he was intelligent.”

“How romantic.”

“The heart wants what it wants.”

“The timing is off.”

“How so?”

“I tell you I need money for my tuition, then a few days later you’re telling me you’re getting married to some rich alien.”

“It happened really fast.”

“You never mentioned your relationship with him once.”

“You had other things on your mind. Last year of highschool, college admission. Did you really want me telling you about how I made out with my boss in his office?”

Damian made a disgruntled face. But he persisted, damn it. “You can’t gross me out of this conversation, you know?”

Sadly, she knew. So Alissia did the only logical thing. She pulled down the delicate veil over her face and her bright red lips.

Only then, when her face was half-hidden by the fabric, did she look at her brother. She took his hands into hers and gazed up at him, making sure her red smile was big under the gauzy fabric.

“Damian, I love you, but today is my wedding day and I want to enjoy it. Do you trust me?”

He nodded instantly.
