The drums they played had enormous silver feathers dangling from them, the likes Alissia had never seen on Earth; they jumped and danced with the beat.

Then there was the table itself. Rectangular, with thick, log-like legs. Alissia glimpsed carvings of weird, alien creatures on its surface.

Well, the few spots she could see, because the table was full.

Not Christmas full.

Not Thanksgiving full.

Deruzianfull.

The mountain of food awaiting them was literally out of this world. Huge platters with meat that still sizzled. Baskets of steamed vegetables. Some kind of bird that would make an ostrich seem puny was glistening in the center. A berry sauce dripped from its crispy skin. Alissia wanted to lick every last drop.

She sat down at the head of the table, next to Rynar. She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. Sweet, tangy, and spicy herbs invaded her senses.

Deruzian servers immediately sprung from the forest, bringing in more plates and carving the heaps of meat just begging to be savored.

“Is this to your liking?” Rynar had asked as a plate the size of the moon had been placed in front of Alissia.

He asked that a lot. If she liked it, if she enjoyed it. He always wanted to know how she felt about the things he did or said. It was…new. The good kind of new. Alissia liked it.

But did she likethis? This amazing culinary display?

Alissia wasn’t about to tell Rynar she survived with tasteless sandwiches and the occasional coffee to keep her going. Three seats down, Damian stared hungrily at the feast. He’d been scrimping, too.

“I love it,” she’d said, smiling up at Rynar. She’d learned her lesson; when he asked, she replied. “Thank you for making it so…alive.”

He’d smiled back. “And thank you for organizing such a special wedding ceremony.”

“Hey, you brought Zamolxy.”

“Zamolxy brought himself. And you did a great job.”

Alissia felt her cheeks reddening. One of these days, she’d have to learn how to take a compliment. Might as well start now.

“My pleasure. I like organizing things,” she’d said and her voice hadn’t gone into that weird high pitched register either.

“I do, too.”

“We have to be careful, or people will start calling us a power couple.”

Rynar had cocked his head to the side. God, his horns looked nice enough to lick. Forget the sauce, that’s what Alissia wanted to try.

“As in a couple who has power?” he asked.

“A couple with two beings who are more powerful together.”

A corner of his mouth had ticked up in a devious smirk. “I like that.”

So did Alissia. But she was a few replies away from telling him to kiss her again, so she dug into her food. Her amazing, mouth-watering, herby, spicy food.

When she’d filled her belly for the next three days, she’d noticed the guests were staring at them. Like they’d forgotten-how-to-blink staring. But these gazes weren’t the cold, envious ones back at the office. They were warm and soft and waiting for something Alissia didn’t know how to give.

So she’d started fidgeting. Then Rynar, in his bottomless eye for detail, had proposed the human alphabet game he’d learned at some boring human conference.

Then Kiara had called them cute and, well, Alissia was definitely blushing now.

“I agree, you two look really good together,” Lily said as she snuggled closer to Zaryn, her golden head on his strong shoulder. “I still can’t believe you didn’t tell us you two were togethertogether. When did it happen?”
