“It kind of took us both by surprise,” Alissia said. Which was completely true.
“You two aren’t the only ones who’ve worked late together,” Rynar said. Again, not a lie.
They exchanged a quick glance, like tricksters putting on a show. And everyone was buying it. Even Damian looked more relaxed–or maybe he was sleepy from all the food.
But…was it a show?
Alissia couldn’t tell anymore.
The lines between reality and lie had been blurring since the night Alissia had shown up on Rynar’s doorstep.
In front of them, Lily blushed and Zaryn cleared his throat. They hadn’t been as cagey about how their relationship had started. It had all been very scandalous at the time. The first official human-Deruzian couple in history. What really saved them was the fact that they were fated mates.
Both Lily and Darcy had tried explaining the concept to Alissia–“he’s my other half, literally; the universe created us for each other, isn’t that romantic?”.
Alissia didn’t get it. Relationships were hard work, they didn’t happen magically.
Then again, she’d just gotten married to an alien with horns, who’d come from another planet. Stranger things had happened.
“Hear that?” Nazyn nodded at Deryg and Kiara. There was mischief in his deep voice.
“Hear what?” Deryg asked distractedly, piling his plate with more food.
“Working late together can lead to trouble.”
“What kind of trouble?”
Nazyn draped his right arm over Darcy’s shoulders and clicked his tongue; it was the Deruzian equivalent of an eye-roll. “Theromantickind.”
In sync, Deryg and Kiara raised their brows. Then they both started laughing, as if on cue.
“Yeah, that’s not going to happen,” Kiara said between giggles. “We’re just friends.”
Oblivious friends, who already copied each other’s mannerisms.Sure.
“I give them a month,” Rynar whispered.
“Make it two, Kiara need to organize that party first,” Alissia said.
“It’s a bet.”
“We’re friends when we’re not driving each otherup the ceiling,” Deryg went on.
“It’sup the wall,” Kiara said.
“I know. But I think we passed the wall level yesterday. So we’re on the ceiling,” Deryg said.
Kiara did roll her eyes. “You cannot interrogate and pat down the guests for the fundraising party.”
“I definitely can,” Deryg said. “But you said it was rude.”
“It is. People will think you’re suspecting them of something sinister.”
“The only beings I trust are seated at this table.” Deryg looked at Damian, who sat right beside him. “You, I don’t know. But you seem trustworthy, too.”
Damian huffed a laugh. “Thanks.”
“I can vouch for him,” Alissia said, her big sister mode activating.
