“I can, too,” Rynar said.
Both Alissia’s and Damian’s gazes shot to Rynar, surprised. They had gotten so used to the idea of the two of them against the world. Their own little team facing obstacles, nobody there to truly stand up for them.
And then Rynar had to go and say those three little words and make Alissia’s heart swell. Rynar sticking his neck out for her brother, even in such a small way, in front of all his most trusted friends…it meant something to her.
Perhaps it meant something to Damian, too. He’d gotten quiet, looking at Rynar as if he couldn’t quite figure him out.
Neither could Alissia.
Rynar had put in effort to organize their wedding.
He noticed when she was antsy and distracted her.
He wanted to know what she was thinking.
He trusted her.
He gave her brother a very public seal of approval in front of all these important Deruzians.
Heat coursed through Alissia’s body. She didn’t know what to do. Or say. So she grabbed her cup and took a long sip of the sweet nectary juice while she figured it out.
“Ah,” one of the female Deruzians seated at the end of the table said. “Be careful with that, I understand it’s a powerful aphrodisiac for human females. Though with your wedding night coming up…”
Alissia coughed. With all the issues they had to take care of these past few days, she’d completely forgotten about that.
She was going to be alone with Rynar.
Again.
On their wedding night.

RYNAR
Rynar didn’t surprise himself often. Never, to be perfectly honest.
Until he’d met Alissia.
Then it was one surprise after another. The amazing part was that Rynar wasn’t bothered by it.
He liked his life organized. He liked control and hated giving it up.
But around Alissia, none of that mattered.
“We have to do it,” he said as the two of them wandered through the forest alone, their tired steps echoing between the tall, imposing trees.
Rynar had better eyesight, so more twigs crunched under Alissia’s feet–which were now thankfully wrapped in some kind of soft shoes with strings that tied them together. He didn’t quite know why Alissia was glad nobody could see them under her long dress, but at least they did not have those dagger points at the end.
“We don’thaveto,” Alissia said. A smile played on her lips and Rynar liked that.
He was–Nines help him–happy. He was happy he’d gotten married. To Alissia. He kept walking closer to her than he ever had, paying attention to each one of her expressions. Each delicate gesture.
“Didn’t you say you wanted to see the sunrise?” he asked.
“I might have mentioned it,” she said. “In my defense, it’s extremely romantic, okay?”
“And what are we doing now?”
