Alissia frowned. “Questions about what?”

Rynar swallowed. “This.”

Right before her eyes, his back began to shift. The skin bulged at an unnatural angle, as if something was trying to spring out of his flesh.

Two things, actually.

In an instant, a pair of wings jutted out from his back, wide enough to cast a deep shadow over her in the soft rays of light filtering through the trees.

Alissia's mouth hung open.

He. Had. Wings.

“Still holding on tight?” he asked.

With Alissia’s nod, he propelled them into the air.

RYNAR

“Wings?” Alissia paced in the living room.

“Agunto your head?” Rynar shook off the last threads of what remained of his wedding suit.

“That seems like something you should have disclosed at one point. You canfly.”

“You said you wereokay. That means you are alright. That means you are not. In.Danger.”

“He was afraid of his own shadow.”

“Frightened beings do inexcusable and wild things. Such askilling.”

“I didn’t want to distract you, you were already fighting off fourarmedmen.”

“Protecting you is more important than trying to disarm and incapacitate them without physically harming them. I would have been a lot faster if I hadn’t tried to spare them.”

“You tried not to hurt them? That’s…weirdly endearing.”

“It was hard not to break their jaws, but I did it. I wouldn’t have if I knew one of them was trying to kill mywifewhile–”

“Issia mommy now?” Zinny’s excited voice cut through the argument.

Rynar and Alissia both stopped, heads swiveling his way. They’d been so wrapped up in their argument that neither of them had noticed Zinny sitting patiently on the couch. He now looked at Alissia with a curious tilt of his head and excitement in his eyes.

“I–” Alissia opened and closed her mouth a couple of times before her questioning gaze jumped to Rynar’s.

All the tension that had built up in his muscles evaporated. “Yes, Zinny. Alissia is your new mommy.”

He didn’t know who seemed more thrilled at that–Alissia, who instantly picked up Zinny, cradling him to her chest, or the cat, who rubbed his little head against her chin, purring.

“I can’t believe you called me mommy,” Alissia whispered into his fur, nuzzling him. “That is so cute.”

A curious feeling tugged at Rynar’s hearts. It resembled happiness a bit too much for his peace of mind.

“Zinny, Alissia and I need to talk,” Rynar said.

“Okay,” Zinny purred, not bothering to move from her embrace.
