“I–” She licked her lips and looked up at him with such vulnerability, it tore at him. She’d never been so open. His breath caught as he kept staring at her. Then she smiled. “Yeah, you are, aren’t you? You tried to protect me.”

And he’d almost lost his mind when he saw the man was armed. But Alissia was used to being highly independent and resolving issues on her own. He couldn’t shove himself and his help into her life.

He didn’t want to be too much too soon for her.

But Nines damn it, did he want to. But it was up to Alissia whether she let him in.

“And I will keep on trying to protect you for as long as you want it,” he said.

She sent a soft, grateful smile his way. “I was right.”

“With what?”

“No guy has ever treated me like you do.” With that small statement, she melted Rynar’s hearts even more–and seemed to snap out of whatever dark thoughts had clouded her energy. She looked down at the muddy end of her dress and began to laugh softly. “I think we broke two records tonight.”

“Oh?” Rynar played along. He was happy she was finally feeling like herself again.

“The first Deruzian-human marriageandthe absolute worst wedding night in existence.”

Rynar joined in on her laughter. It was intoxicating. “It was, as you humans so endearingly say, ashit show.”

Now her laughter grew and bubbled, a delightful sound that broke whatever tendrils of tension still remained. “It was, wasn’t it? Bloody awful.”

“Now, now. It wasn’t bloody. I know of at least a dozen ancient Deruzian weddings that ended with hundreds of deaths. I was very careful not to let that happen this time.”

Even though he’d wanted to. The craving for the blood of the ones who’d threatened Alissia had almost overtaken him. But how would that have helped? A dead being cannot be interrogated.

Worst of all, he might have scared Alissia.

“Thank you, I’ll take that as a very weird wedding gift,” she said.

“Humans think life is the greatest gift of all, yes?”

“That’s a very peculiar way of looking at it.” She laughed, biting her lower lip. “Thank the heavens you’re funny or else this would have been really awkward.”

“I aim to please.” Her. Rynar wanted to please her. Whatever it took. “So how can I please you now?”

Alissia huffed a surprised laugh. “Wow, you’re really good with words. Has anyone told you that?”

“They might have.” He smirked.

“Honestly, I just want to forget the last hour. Oh, and I’ll need your help getting this dress off.” She craned her neck to look at her back. “It has too many buttons to count.”

She said it so innocently, Rynar doubted her mind had gone to the decadent places his had. Because he pictured a slow reveal of her body, the anticipation building with each button, sweet kisses on her neck.

He shook his head.

“Very well, forgetting is it,” he said as they turned and walked down the hallway leading toward their rooms.

“I’m so tired, but…is it weird that I kind of don’t want this night to end?” she said, almost whispering.

“We’re in charge. It ends when we want it to.”

He playfully stepped in front of her as they reached their door and raised his arms, propping them against the doorframe and blocking her access.

Rynar didn’t want the good mood to change, either. He wanted to keep hearing Alissia giggle and he was ready to do weird things for it, apparently.

“Sorry, can’t go any further until we take care of something else you said you wanted,” he said with a smirk.
