He undid another button. Then another. And another.
The fabric began to slide, but Alissia didn’t feel the cold seeping into her skin. Rynar’s body behind her felt like a furnace, beckoning her closer.
Her body leaned back, like it had a mind of its own. Alissia wanted to let it and let go. She did. Get lost in Rynar’s embrace once more and feel the thrill of him coursing through her.
But their situation was complicated.
They were married, but not really.
They were attracted to each other, obviously, but still had to work together.
And she didn’t know exactly what Rynar wanted. Hell, she didn’t even know what she wanted exactly.
Until they decided, whatever fire they were stocking right now was dangerous.
He ran his finger down her spine, where the fabric had covered her before.
Alissia decided to be a big girl and form words. “Are you trying to seduce me?”
“If it’s working, I am.”
“And if it’s not?”
“I’ll have to try harder.”
Alissia sucked in a breath as a deep pool of desire opened up inside her. But the intensity of the emotions only reminded her that she needed to keep her cool. One wrong move and everything could fall apart.
Did she want Rynar all over her? Yes,please.
But that would complicate things too much.
He’d said they only had to pretend to be married for a month. If there was one thing Alissia had learned during law school and the years working at Alien Inc. it was that contracts and feelings didn’t mix.
But then he went and did things like protect her and try to make her happy and make her brother feel welcomed with his friends. That didn’t seem like a one-month-fake-relationship kind of behavior.
Alissia had to use all her strength to step away from the mirror and Rynar. “I–I’m...confused.”
Three years of law school, countless internships, and thousands of pages read, and all her mind could come up with wasconfused.
Well, screw it, she was.
“Very well,” he said, voice too even for her peace of mind. Every cell inside her body told her to look at him, stare into his deep, dark alien eyes to knowexactlywhat he was feeling, but she couldn’t. Because she was afraid of what she’d see there–disappointment. “Zinny’s in your room. I can go wake him up. Or take the couch.”
“No, it’s okay, we can…share a bed,” she said. “I trust you.”
“Do you?”
Alissia nodded. She did trust him, in so many ways. Just not with her heart.
Rynar tilted his head to the side and watched her, for what felt like an eternity. His eyes roamed over her, making Alissia’s skin prickle. She liked it. His attention, his words, even the comfortable silence between them.
But with each passing second, she became more restless.
Finally, when she couldn’t take it anymore, she found the courage to glance up at him. She gasped when they locked eyes.
There was no disappointment shining in his dark gaze. Only desire. His alien pupils had dilated so much, the dark eating away at the silver until only shadows of craving remained.
“Alissia,” he said, his low voice sending shivers down her spine. “What do you want to do?”
