Alissia left the decadent comfort of the bed and stood, wrapping herself in one of Rynar’s robes, which almost swallowed her up. The bottom of his sleeves reached her knees. This was ridiculous–and luxurious.
She rubbed her cheek against the fabric, inhaling deeply. It smelled fiery and powerful, just like him.
She stood in the center of the room, a bit lost. Rynar hadn’t exactly given her a crash course of how to do this; he could have just used the phone.
She waved her right hand in a nonsensical pattern.
Nothing happened–apart from Zinny’s meow sounding remarkably like a laugh. “Mommy silly.”
She did feel silly–getting instructions from a cat, even one as adorable as Zinny. “How does Daddy do it?”
He raised his paw, flicking it in the air. Okay, Alissia could do that.
She flicked her own fingers in a nonsensical pattern. A buzz rang through the walls. Succe–
“Initiating air purification sequence,” a metallic voice called through the walls, before a chilly breeze blew through the room in a harsh sucking noise.
The hairs on Zinny’s back instantly bristled.
“No, no, baby, it’s just air.” Alissia picked him up, cradling him to her chest. The poor thing was shaking. She waved her hand frantically. “Stop, stop. The air is clean enough and you’re scaring my boy. I said stop!”
Mercifully, it did–but the ruckus left her with a ringing in her ear.
Why, oh why hadn’t Rynar just used a phone, like a normal lawyer?
“Your daddy’s infuriating sometimes,” she mumbled, stroking Zinny’s head. “Okay, let’s try this again.”
Because she was dying to find out where Rynar had left. She thought about the way he moved his hands, in such a precise, Deruzian way. Then her mind wandered to just how good those hands of his felt on her body.
Alissia shook her head. She was a woman on a mission. She raised her palm again, pulling on the sleeve to extricate her fingers, and tried to mimic Rynar’s precise gesture. “Give me the message.”
On cue, Rynar appeared in the middle of the room. Alissia startled. Only it wasn’t him–it was his hologram. She’d seen Nazyn and Darcy present it at the Forum, but it was still a striking piece of alien technology that amazed her.
In the image, Rynar was hastily getting dressed and not too happy about it.
“Good morning,” he said, flicking his tie as if he wanted to strangle someone with it. Hearing his voice, even a bit muffled through a hologram, sent shivers down Alissia’s spine. “I amdeeply sorry I’m not there to say it personally. By the time you wake up, I’ll be in a meeting at Alien Inc. to discuss what happened last night.”
Good. That ambush had been scary. What if she’d been alone in the forest?
“Deryg just called, he has some new information. And I’d just like to say I was having a fantastic morning, watching you sleep on my chest, then I had to look at his disgruntled face. Did not enjoy that transition,” he mumbled, pulling on his jacket as if he wanted to tear it. Alissia did not envy Deryg today, no sir.
Rynar looked to his side in the hologram, a soft smile lighting his face. “You’re a very sound sleeper. And you look beautiful.”
Alissia belatedly blushed. She must’ve been really tired not to hear a word of this while she’d slept.
“Is it strange that I already miss you and you’re lying only a few feet away from me?” he asked.
Alissia shook her head, though he couldn’t see her. She missed him already, too. Saps, the both of them.
“Nothing but an urgency such as this could have pulled me away from you now. But I promise I will be back as fast as I can–and we will talk about everything we want and need to,” he finished, the smile never leaving his face.
“Zinny, come keep Mommy company,” he called out in a whisper before the hologram turned off.
“I did,” Zinny said, nuzzling closer to her chest.
“Yes, you did. Such a good boy.” With an awesome Daddy. Leaving her cute messages and taking care of business, all in one–
The hologram popped up again.
