“Good morning,” Rynar said again.
Alissia groaned. As much as she liked looking at Rynar, staring at him on a loop wasn’t how she planned on spending her morning.
She waved her hand again, but nothing happened. Then she flicked it to the right, sleeve covering her palm.
The hologram disappeared, replaced by a new image. One with a beautiful, luxurious valley. A mighty river ran through it, houses jutting on its bank. The trees were too tall and spindly to be Earthen.
“What is this?” Alissia asked, transfixed. She moved closer to the hologram.
“Daddy’s home,” Zinny said. He sounded excited.
“I thought Deruzia was one great big desert and acidic ocean.” But this looked like an oasis, tucked between lush hills.
“No, this Daddy’s home,” Zinny insisted.
“It’s…beautiful.”
“We go there,” Zinny went on. “Soon this my home, too.”
Alissia froze. “You mean…do you mean you’ll live there?”
“Yes, yes. Climb trees.” Zinny extended his claws. “Daddy move valley.”
“Daddy’s…moving to that valley?” Alissia’s heart constricted. “When?”
“Soon. Excited.”
“At least one of us is,” she mumbled, mind reeling.
How soonwassoon? And how come Rynar hadn’t mentioned this to her? He planned onmoving?
Was that…was that why Rynar wanted their fake marriage to end in a month? So he could move back home?
No, that was absurd…wasn’t it?
In a flurry of robes and long sleeves, Alissia dashed out of the room, Zinny still safely tucked in her arms. She headed straight for the corner of the living room with the biggest potted plant. She placed her hand on the wall right beneath the leaves, just like Rynar had shown her. A click later, a panel from the wall slid to the side, revealing a stack of his most important documents.Sitting on top of them was the most significant one of all–their secret contract.
Alissia hadn’t thought much about the fact that Rynar hadn’t hesitated for a second before he’d shown Alissia where he kept his papers. She was his paralegal, it was normal for her to deal with his documents. But as she retrieved the contract now, it struck her just how much he trusted her.
So why not tell her about moving back to Deruzia?
She opened the contract, which had been rolled up neatly. There, staring at her in crimson ink, was their agreement. One month from the moment they said their I do’s, not a day later.
A pit of worry opened up inside her. They hadn’t discussed what last night had meant. In fact, they’d kept talking about how they didn’t want this whole marriage to ruin their professional relationship.
If he was leaving, then he wouldn’t worry about that, right?
She was spiraling. She had to be. There was no way Rynar would just decide to leave without telling her. Zinny must’ve misunderstood.
The doorbell ring snapped her back to reality. She flinched.
Calm down, there’s no way those idiots from last night found you.
No, that was impossible. But the fact that she’d even thought about that possibility meant she wasn’t as over the ambush last night as she tried to convince herself.
She made her way to the front door cautiously, looked at the screen next to it, and grinned. Damian was early.
She went to open the door and realized she still gripped the contract, hard enough to crumple it. Damian couldnotsee it.
