She quickly tucked it in one of the robe’s huge pockets, her hand sweaty against the paper. With Zinny in one arm, the other concealed in the pocket, and a huge smile on her face, she opened the door.
“Hey! Are you okay? You–” Damian froze at the threshold, eyes snapping to Zinny. “That’s new.”
“Good to see you, too.” Alissia smiled. “This is Zinny.”
“He is so fluffy.” Damian’s eyes widened. “Can I hold him?”
Alissia looked down at Zinny, who gave a low purr. “I think that’s a yes.”
“I haven’t held a cat in…damn, ages,” Damian said excitedly, opening his palms. He looked like her little brother again, amazed at the fact that trees grew their leaves back every spring. But he was now a man. Tall, with a propensity for wearing black that Alissia did not understand–and excitement when he saw animals.
She extended her arm, keeping Zinny securely in her grasp. “I should warn you, he can–”
Just as Damian’s palms circled Zinny and Alissia loosened her hold on him, the cat decided to speak. “Hi.”
“Oh, shit.” Damian flinched back.
Acting on instinct, Alissia’s other hand flew up to support Zinny’s weight. The long sleeve snagged on the contract, pulling it out of the pocket. It fell to the floor with a soft woosh.
Before Alissia could react, Damian had already bent down.
“You dropped–” His eyes darkened as his eyes jumped on the crimson page. Thunder clouded his features, making them sharp and harsh. “Alissia, what is this?”

RYNAR
“They are smarter than I gave them credit for last night,” Deryg said in that absolute certain way of his that didn’t leave room for argument. “The last member to join their little group was the one who pulled a gun on Alissia. He was very forthcoming during the interrogation. Unfortunately, he didn’t know much. The rest aren’t talking. At least not anything useful, they keep going on and on about how Deruzians will destroy Earth and steal its women. Sounds like propaganda to me.”
Rynar drummed his fingers on the long table. The entire building was deserted, save for Mr. Rogers, the elderly security guard Zaryn insisted on still employing, and the Deruzians gathered in this large conference room.
Rynar sat at one end of it, as the party who’d been most affected by the ambush last night, and Yakirian, the CEO of Alien Inc., sat opposite him, stern-faced and imposingly silentas always. Between them, on each side of the table, the highest ranking Deruzians on Earth had gathered.
This was a problem they needed to quell as soon as possible or countless lives could be at risk and their relations with Earth might be jeopardized forever.
“They were surprised at what their weapons could and couldn’t do,” Rynar said with barely leashed fury. His mind kept jumping back to the moment they splashed the acid on his back. It would have burned Alissia to the bone. “Any information on what that liquid was?”
“Our techs are still working on it,” Zaryn said. “We’ve sent samples to Deruzia as well and should hear back in two days.”
A lifetime when it came to his wife’s safety.
“The weapons?”
“No markings,” Nazyn said. His hair was tousled, as if he’d forgotten he needed to sleep. “I’ve searched through our entire database. They’re unlike anything I’ve seen–and they’re new.”
“Has this reached the press?” Rynar asked.
“No–and we will keep it that way,” Deryg said, appearing bigger and angrier than all the others. He always wore his fury on his face. But Rynar kept his hidden, a blaze of hot bright vengeance burning in his veins.
“We have to find the source,” Rynar said. “Someone must have given them those guns they were too stupid to know how to use properly.”
Luckily. For them. Because if they’d had actually hurt Alissia, none of those humans would have been breathing right now.
“And find it fast,” Deryg said. “The interstellar celebration is approaching and Kiara is in charge of the party. There will be hundreds of Deruzians and humans there watching our every step, analyzing our company’s success. We cannot fail.”
“We have already failed somewhere if I and Alissia were attacked,” Rynar said, cold voice slithering in the room.“Someone knew about our wedding as it happened. There is a leak.”
“The wedding wasn’t secret, Rynar,” Zaryn said. “The office has been buzzing about your relationship.”
