Rynar stopped at the door to the kitchen. No wonder he hadn’t heard anything.

Zinny sat on a counter, Alissia standing in front of him. Both stared at each other, unmoving; were they even breathing? To the side, there were plates filled with juicy meat and glistening vegetables. An entire feast waiting to be devoured.

Between the two of them was a small plate with what looked like a piece of cheese.

Curious.

But Rynar’s attention was instantly snagged by Alissia. Or better yet, what she was wearing–one of his robes. The red one that he felt most comfortable in, one of the few things he’d brought over from Deruzia.

It was obviously too big for her, but she looked exquisite in it. The fabric hung loose off her right shoulder, revealing her cream skin. Forget the food, Rynar wanted to lick her.

“Do I want to know what’s going on?” he asked.

A few moments of silence passed.

“Mommy mean,” Zinny whined.

“We’ve been over this,” Alissia said patiently. “This cheese has a garlic crust. You are a cat. Cats can’t eat garlic.”

“But why?”

“Because your tummy will hurt.”

“But why?”

“Because your tummy can’t process this kind of food.”

“But why?”

“Because your body doesn’t have the enzymes to do it.”

“But why?”

“Because you are a cat.”

Zinny blinked. He couldn’t ask why he was a cat, now could he?

“But I want,” he whined some more, louder this time. His left front leg kept pawing at the air above the cheese gently, as if he could swipe it if he really concentrated hard enough.

“You can’t have it,” Alissia said in that same even tone.

Zinny flicked his tail. “Butwhy?”

“How long have you been at this?” Rynar whispered as he came to stand behind Alissia.

“Half an hour at least. The food’s probably cold by now,” she whispered back.

“This might be a wild idea, but why don’t you simply…remove the cheese from his general vicinity?”

“Do not take cheese,” Zinny said, sounding horrified even through the metallic twang of his collar.

“Because I want him to understand why he can’t have it, not just say he can’t. He needs to learn rules now, so he knows themfor the future,” Alissia said. “And he got obsessed with this piece of cheese and I couldn’t even bribe him away from it with meat. Juicy, tasty meat you can have right now if–”

Zinny huffed, his whiskers tensing. “Cheese!”

Alissia closed her eyes as she took a deep, long inhale.

“Any suggestions on how to deal with this?” she asked Zaryn over her shoulder.
