She could have all the clever words she wanted, but she could never hope to win a fight like this–

She felt the barrel of the gun digging into her right temple before she’d even heard him appear.

Ice ran down her back as a figure stepped behind her, moist breath against her ear.

“Don’t move,” he whispered.

Alissia’s heart jumped somewhere around the necklace she wore.

She was cornered.

She couldn’t call out to Rynar and risk distracting him. Gunshots rang around the forest; the net and the acid had no effect on him, but what if they’d brought a more powerful weapon with them?

Please be okay, please be okay, please be okay.

Alissia took a deep breath, trying to calm herself.

Rynar had told her success lay in the details. She was a lawyer, damn it. Almost.

Shewantedto be a great lawyer–and she knew the tricks of the trade.

There was no way she would ever overpower this guy using he strength.

But she could use her words as a weapon.

Her tongue was deadly, right?

She could at least buy herself more time.

With another deep breath, she managed to get her lungs under control.

Assess the situation and find your opponent’s weakness. That’s what she had to do.

Which one of the brutes was it? It couldn’t have been the mountainous one that led them, the figure behind her felt smaller.

“I said–I said don’t move,” he stuttered.

He was scared, good. Alissia could definitely use that.

“Alissia?” Rynar bellowed, followed by a grunt.

Her chest ached. Had he been hit?

“Don’tanswer,” the guy behind her hissed.

“I’m okay. Deal with them. Fast,” she whispered so softly, she barely moved her lips. She hadn’t even heard the words herself, whoever was behind her definitely couldn’t have heard.

But Rynar, with his super Deruzian hearing, had. “Faster than light.”

He had to fight the rest of them off.

“What are you going to do to me?” she asked the guy. She didn’t even have to pretend her voice wavered. She was frightened–but she wouldn’t give up without a fight.

“Curious, huh?” he asked after a few beats.

He’d hesitated. Why?

“You haven’t even decided?” she asked. “This seems like a lot of work for a plan that doesn’t sound all too concrete.”
